For those who read the Mail then there were some readers letters yesterday of visitors getting took to the cleaners in Venice. Are you someone who eats and drinks a lot at the ports you visit,Have you been "Overcharged' .We only ever have a drink when ashore and rarely eat at any restaurants ,yet listen to fellow passengers who seem to eat and drink at every port. Best I heard was from an American Could who in Cannes found a "Real Burger Bar' and paid around £11 for a Beer. So would you pay up or argue .....Davybe
sinbad10 757
£11 for a beer in Cannes is normal average price depending where you are it is the same in Monaco if you have a drink in Casino Square at Cafe de Paris the prices are extortionate to us common tourists but to the multi millionaires who live there it is nothing. I never by fish priced by the 100 grms - a recipe for a rip off. I can honestly say i don`t think I`ve ever been ripped off but then I do my research and avoid the tourist traps. sinbad10 757
You expect to pay a higher price in a place like Venice and even more so around the St Marks Square area but nobody would expect or think good value of over 500 euros for a meal for 3 people. Davybe 529
I find prices in general higher in tourist areas, get into the side streets where the locals shop and prices drop. I thought in. the Caribbean they had a tourist price (the one on display) and the locals got it cheaper.....Davybe Mayway
Countrygirl 237
We had coffee and a slice of fresh pizza in Venice at a very reasonable price ( can’t remember what we actually paid). just watch where the locals go. Keep off the main streets use the side streets.
GiGi 105
On our recent trip to Venice we ate at Harry’s Dolce. Two mains, one desert, and a bottle of wine €195. It was ok but nowhere near worth that price. Some work colleagues took their two teenage kids the week after we came home and stopped for a snack, two cans of coke each and a hotdog each, €119. I guess they are making their money before the sea rises and all is lost!
Countrygirl 237
I paid £8 for a Hotdog at Farnborough Airshow this year and felt ripped off, maybe it wasn’t too bad after all! Davybe and HLM 1
TrentAnn 31
Four years ago visiting Venice on a Princess cruise, being mindful of the extortionate prices being charged In the popular tourist areas I wandered into the Museum, which was a good move as I was surprised to find a Cafe' on the first floor. Noticing most of the customers appeared to be locals I ordered a Pannini with salad plus a cappuccino and then found a table by the window overlooking St. Mark's Square ........ all this and change from €15 - bargain ! Museum - top right hand corner of the attached photo. Davybe

Try the Golf Open you get ripped in two ,not just ripped off The Venders at these events have to pay a very high price to get a pitch , even if the weather turns nasty and they have customers....Davybe
cruise chef 866
It's always the same, major sporting events or festivals as they know you are a captive market and they have to recoup the high costs of having a pitch it's always the poor customer(literally) that comes home with an empty wallet. There are definitely some tourist traps that fit into this Venice as mentioned. Raffles bar in Singapore is another.

We had a coffee, 2 small bottles of beer and some nibbles in St Mark's Square and it cost us about 58 euros. A lot of people looked at the menu and immediately got up and left. My husband tried that but as I pointed out how often are we going to do this. We also paid about £17 for a Singapore sling in Raffles bar. Yes I know, but it's the experience isn't it. That's what I told him.😉
DavidH 596
Gonna be there in about a month's time for a 3 night stay before boarding Azamara Quest. Fourth or fifth visit but, for how much longer, I wonder? DavidH

seawitch 291
We usually eat lunch in ports. Always read menu carefully lookout for'table charge' 'cover charge' 'service charge' 'bread charge' 'entertainment charge'. We have walked away from some restaurants when these are mentioned in the small print. Most expensive meal we had was 45 euros for a seafood banquet with bottle of wine, bottle of water, dessert and coffee . In Venice there are some reasonably priced restaurants just a little way from St Marks.Last time we asked a local market trader for recommendations and had a lovely Spaghetti Vongole and glass of white wine -under £10 for 2 of us , we were the only non-Italians there. Cappuccino in a little Venician square was just over 1 euro. In Portofino everything is super expensive, but order 2 Spritz in the right bar they may be 10 euro's each but they come with so many free snacks /salads you don't need lunch.
