Is It A Bribe or a Tip?

Recommended Posts

Just reading on another website, that this person gave a Barman $20 on the first night of the cruise ,and got premium drinks instead of the standard ones.

Would you Tip before getting service from Bar staff (Tip = To ensure a personal Service)

We travel quite a bit with Celebrity and use the Elite Members Cocktail service most night's, We were with one couple who asked the server if they were on for the full cruise, serving in that bar, after the waiter confirmed he was the man gave $10 to "Look after us" We never waited for a drink and rarely had to ask for refills ,he saw we were getting low and brought fresh drinks out fo us, He even went and had drinks ready for us as we walked in.We All Tipped again at the end of the cruise.Next cruise he was waiting on again we got brilliant service.

Now some people feel this is a bribe and should not be allowed ,what do you think.....Davybe

I wonder if it works in the casino???  If it does I'm in!!

Interesting If you want to dump your monies and prove how wealthy or ignorant you are then go for it . As long as service to me is professional and a reasonable wait period,  a non issue Man

What anyone else does with auto gratuities or whether they tip in advance to get better service is nothing to do with you and none of your business.

It may well be a good idea for you Davybe, but for other people witnessing it and receive slower service as a result in the long run the waiter may well lose out, because I suspect others may remove the auto-grats and give poor feed back or even report the individual concerned.

Removing the Auto grats will not effect the bar staff, both Celebrity and P&O pay them a small hourly wage and they make up the rest of their wages from what we pay for the drink's. And I doubt that others would complain ?Even if the noticed...Davybe

I'd certainly complain, especially if I'd been waiting patiently for service only to witness 'friends' of the bar staff jumping the queue because of backhanders.

With regards to the autograts you maybe right, however I'd ensure that one persons actions would directly impact on others and withdraw them, then perhaps they'd think twice about doing it again, I'd happily tell other crew members the name of the person and why they'd been withdrawn.

Not on the slots, it don't?

My Father in law taught me that tipping trick, we a were at a wedding some 45 years ago ,he got to the front of a crowded bar ,and gave the Barman a ten bob note ,we never waited for drinks after that.

Why do people just stand by the bar at weddings, it's like drinking in the Kitchen at parties....Davybe

Ok then, you've sat waiting patiently in the bar for 15 minutes to get served, then golden boy comes in and gets served straight away and before you, would you not say anything? I certainly would, I don't like bribery and that's loosely what this is.

Regards autograts quite correct none of my business what others do, but I'm talking about myself here and if I withdrew mine I suppose in the same vein it'd be none of your business.

Luckily for you you'll probably never know, however if I do see someone slip a score in the barmans back pocket I'll make myself known just in case it's you, before I make my way to reception ;)

Correct it would be none of my business and I wouldnt make it mine either as what others do on their cruises is up to them and of no worry to me.

We have never tipped up front,  but we do sometimes slip the servers in happy hour a couple of dollars when they serve us. Maybe once in an evening because we know they are paid a flat rate for those hours and we are getting free drinks.  If  the servers  are slightly more attentive that is fine.  If not, we are not concerned, neither am I concerned if others are served before me.  They may be long time cruisers who are known to the servers.  They may be related to his grandma.  They may have tipped up front.  Who am I to judge, although HLM  seems to be sure they tipped or bribed.

I'm not sure of anything, what I'm saying is that if I was aware that they were taking "bribes" and as a result it directly impacted on me I'd certainly report it, which I'd be perfectly entitled to do, and if people are being honest so would they.

And at reception what are you going to say?You already cancel your Auto tip's so no point in doing twice?

And Reporting a passenger for giving a barman/server  a tip would cause a great amount of laughter I would have thought...Davybe:rolleyes:

But they are not taking bribes they are taking tips whether we like it or not.

What I'd say is that I don't appreciate CREW giving preferential treatment to those who've given them a backhand payment.

Like I said earlier if people are openly honest they'd be pi**ed off if they'd waited patiently to be served only for someone to jump the queue because of it.

Did I say I'd report a passenger?

In your opening post did you not say "IMO it is a bribe to get good service"?

Now you appear to be saying they are not bribes but tips?

The opening post categorically states that a tip was given on the first night with the sole aim of getting better service and essentially resulted in jumping the queue and getting premium drinks etc, Davybe then advised that their travelling companions done similar with the view to "look after us", we were then asked our thoughts and outlined in my previous posts are mine.

I believe it to be a bribe and don't agree with it, will I stop it happening obviously not, would I be correct to raise the issue if it impacted on me I believe I am, others may disagree but that's life isn't it?

The way the original post is written ir certainly sounds more like a bribe than a tip for services rendered.

My intention was to get views and whether it was tipping or bribing? I would call it tipping.

We sail with both P&O and Celebrity. Celebrity offer you the chance to pre pay your tips  .Or pay cash ,or have them daily added to your account.

P&O you have the choice of using the auto payment, added to your account first night, or paying in cash.

If I opted for Pre-paying or Auto Tipping ,to me that is just the same as giving a staff member a tip ,on the hope I get better service?

Just my opinion....Davybe

Well I see it as 'tipping' we often tip the bar waiters during a cruise if we have been served by the same one several nights running .. it isn't a bribe as we've already had the good service it's what we call appreciation, I can't say I've ever noticed we get any special attention nor would I expect it, the majority of the crew are all very experienced they take several orders at the same time and deliver the same so no-one really gets any preferential treatment, if there is a delay then it is no doubt at the bar as the poor barmen/women aren't just dealing with our order.

I see nothing wrong with tipping any crew member at any point during a cruise if you feel the service is good and of course there is the provision on the receipt to 'add' a tip so it's obviously not frowned on by the cruise line.
