Celebrity Smoking Penalty

I recently had a very good 5 night cruise on Celebrity Eclipse.

Celebrity provide what I consider to be more than generous 'nominated' spaces for smokers, including what I considered a particularly large area near the Sunset Bar...

Cabin information booklets and the interactive televisions were clear where these areas were and also clearly stated where smoking was not allowed.

As a non- smoker I try to avoid these smoking areas like the plague as I, and many others, find the smell that permeates around them quite revolting.

But I do accept that smokers have these spaces and would in turn expect them to equally respect the sensitivities of 'non-smokers'.

Imagine my surprise when, on the last full day of that cruise Celebrity thought it necessary to issue a stern warning to smokers on the last edition of the daily paper, 'Celebrity Today'...

For me and a number of other passengers the clear implication of the necessity of this notice was that smokers were not obeying the rules and needed a final reminder.

So well done Celebrity for your initial patience and then another well done for putting your foot down.

It would be good to see equally forceful measures implemented across other cruise lines.

I'm pretty sure the same fines apply across other ships, i know P&O have a similar fine and Cunard too!

being a smoker myself i agree that we should have nominated areas and why would you want to smoke indoors anymore?? i remember a time when we were allowed and it was disgusting!

what makes me laugh is the amount of people who wont go on a cruise because you cant smoke on your balcony!

just book an inside near the smoking area! surely you can wait 3 minutes from when you wake up to walk to the nearest smoking area?!?!?!?!

A complete ban would be ridiculous and they would lose so many passengers! not to mention the lost revenue

I understand what you are saying about the outside bar and i must admit on the azura/ventura where the smoking area is next to the pool undercover i find it brings me to tears.... and i am a smoker!

maybe they should have a more open space to allow for smoking such as right on top deck?

In the end I personally think there will be a complete ban of smoking on cruise ships. How many people on ships actually smoke. Lets be generous and say that on a ship with 3,500 passengers 50 smoke. Yes it sounds a small number but think how may you see in the smoking area at any time. The vast majority of people have given up smoking not just because of health but also because of the cost. 50 is a small number to lose when compared with the cost of providing smoking areas and the cleaning bill of places like the casino. Why do I think there will be a complete ban? Health and Safety. Just needs one person to get a class action in the USA courts on passive smoking and the cruise lines will ban it overnight. Remember years ago you could smoke anywhere on a ship now it is in a small restricted area. It's only a matter of time.

Also just drifting away from cruise ships for a moment the people who pass the laws of the land in the UK ie. Parliament still allow smoking inside certain areas of the Houses of Parliament yet the general public cannot smoke inside public areas.

Sorry for wandering off cruising, but sometimes life is not fair.wink.png

I suppose that I am one of the bad guys here but I too am a smoker and love going on cruises. I do abide by all the rules, but feel that if we smoke where we're allowed to, which is usually out in the open air and it offends any non smokers they should go somewhere else,  the ships are big enough for everyone! All the balcony cabins that we've had you are supposed to keep the doors closed anyway and I totally agree with not smoking on balconies if it offends people around me...Don't try to push your views on others it's not fair!!.In my experience there are still plenty of us " smokers" about especially in Europe so we should have a right to do what we want the same as everyone else.
