The whole concept of humanitarian aid is to aid our fellow humans - not their governments. Sadly, there are many governments that do not look after their population in an appropriate way but that doesn't mean the rest of the World should ignore the plight of fellow humans in desperate or extreme circumstances.

I think people will just to have accept they`ll get it when it comes. People are so unrealistic expecting refunds within timeframes that would be fine usually but are impossible during these times. With so many staff laid off / working from home and companies wrestling to save their futures if you`ve been told it`s on it`s way you just have to wait. I`ve 2 holidays up and coming where I expect problems even in getting money back because of the nature of them with an insurance company saying no insurance companies are paying up for the virus and the holiday supplier saying claim on insurance. If I was told you`ll get it back in 90 days I`d be delighted!

It might be British politicians that are stupid enough to do the damage. Why always blame the EU when it is us that are out of step with the 27 other countries working together?

Exactly so. I threatened to go to formal dinner in swimwear in a desperate attempt to get access to a cabin for a shower. In the end they gave access to an inside cabin 2 decks down at the other end of the ship saying there`ll be dressing gowns in the room. yeah because inside cabins come with gowns! I`m a "he" by the way. Others seemed accepting to the idea of showering poolside in swimwear and then changing. The only thing as bad as the actual responses in terms of service was the speed at which a non-disclosure form came out of the hotel manager`s drawer before our compensation was agreed. More concerned at secrecy than customer satisfaction. Took me 2/3 days to find that some 30 cabins had been affected by the same outage that we were told only affected us and the 2 cabins next to us.

As if I`d wait that long for drinking water! I realised I was on a  loser when we asked for ice on one of the early nights of the cruise to be told by the cabin steward " I don`t have time" before he then offered us the leftover ice from a cabin he hed just cleared!!!!!

I`ve no idea if P&O are going downhill - I just know I wouldn`t go with them again after the one cruise we did with them to the Caribbean. Shocking customer service after going without water i our cabin for 26 hours! Poor service generally. I`m almost embarrassed o other lines when busy workers are flying around the corrdiors and insist on you going first even when it`s easier if they do. No such issue with P&O where they just carry on and in one instance just rammed the trolley into my leg claiming right of way! I argued all the way to the top - with much difficulty - and ended up with compensation as we sailed  but due to the non disclosure form that came out from a readily available pile in their drawer can not now and could not say more at the time. Suffice to say others affected  that seemed to accept the instruction to shower "poolside" for formal dinner night did not do as well it seemed and were far more accepting of the situation. Maybe they`d sailed P&O before and it was the norm!!!!

Exactly it. Dress doesn`t make the man or woman. Me? I dress smart to go out for dinner whether at home or on a ship but I don`t see the need to dress in an out of date dj and bow tie. Insistence on that is no more than snobbery and to be told if you don`t want to dress like that eat in the buffet is insulting. I`ve never been stopped by cruise staff re: my dress even when deciding to dress down from a DJ to a smart jacket/ shirt and tie so will eat anywhere I want to. I`d never eat out in a proper restaurant in shorts/ t-shirt and a baseball cap and would expect those dressed as such to be stopped and asked to eat elsewhere. If the are not then the cruiseline should dispense with the dress code and give it up.

I've been away from the forum for quite some time and have just been catching up on the latest threads. To get back to the original question, rather than address the merits of individual cruise lines, I think it's better to take a look at the industry overall. In the past, deciding on a cruise line based on dress code was extremely limited. If you enjoyed the formality then it was ideal, if not then it was difficult to find suitable options. Nowadays however, let's just appreciate the fact that there are so many different cruise lines to choose from that no matter what your preferences, there is something for all.
For those seeking formal evenings, the options are there; for those who could think of nothing worse, the options are also there. it's great to have such a diverse range of ships, cruise lines, and individual offerings. it's nice to be able to pick and choose based on what suits you rather than the one size fits all approach. I realise the last sentence was packed with puns so I apologise!

I often take it now after having a hard shell case get smashed en route on it`s first outing to South Africa. The scarey trip to purchase tape to last my travels  at a local "supermarket" complete with hand cleaners to combat the spread of aids, cashiers sat inside bullet proof cages and being followed out and down the road after purchase left me never wanting to be in  such a position again.

I see what you did there HLM😉. Of course people have a choice whether or not to pay a tip. Having said that I still believe that those of us who pay tips are subsidising those who pay no tips at all. It will be interesting to see what happens on P&O after May.

I look forward to the day when all cruises include tips in fares so that we all pay the same. What gets me are the number of people, usually Brits I am afraid, who make great play onboard to remove tips as they board and encourage others to do the same. Others like on our last cruise talk loudly of their surprise that all don`t remove them as if others are thick and then say but "we still tip who we feel deserve it - it wasn`t much but we left all our spare coins". I know that RCI use tips to top up pay of dining room staff and cabin stewards and that all other staff on RCI are salaried including kitchen staff / chefs / entertainers etc. I know because I left a note on my review stating that I was annoyed that so many other Brits were boasting about taking off tips and saving money for drinks and suggested they needed to change their policy and could someone contact me to discuss policies. Some 6 weeks later a woman rang me from RCI in Florida who was happy to discuss gratuities. She didn`t want to offend anyone and said it was a customer decision but staff were interviewed about what in their service was not going right if tips were removed and removal did affect pay. That they had no intention of removing them and upping fares at that time surprised me but again she stated that she was aware that the tipping culture in the Uk was very different. I stated that I resented being charged extra on my fare in effect by not wishing to reduce crew wages and again she thanked me but stated it was up to individuals. very surprised by the whole conversation.

All these meanies and tight-wads who say they remove tips and feel annoyed with the cruise lines for forcing them to top up the crew members' salaries, aren't you aware that if gratuities were removed altogether, the price of your wonderful cruise would go up considerably, and you tight-wads and meanies wouldn't probably be able to afford to cruise anyway??

Maybe that would be a blessing.
Personally I'm all for the gratuities being pre-paid, (and therefore non-optional), as this would reduce the number of mean-spirited people on board who I have NO time for, as they would be priced out due to budgeting for their cruise without paying tips to anyone.
We all know that many who remove gratuities DON'T pay a single tip to any crew member, although they'll have us believe they do tip, yeah right!!

Like others have said, I am happy to leave the auto-gratuities on, as I take these in to account when budgeting for my cruise.
If I cannot afford to tip, then I cannot afford to cruise, simple!
Thankfully after having cruised 24 times already, with 3 more booked, I am pleased to say that I can still afford to cruise and am happy to tip the crew and onboard staff for the great service I receive.

Standard practice so I doubt you`ll get anywhere. The only way you can get a package is if you pay for it in full before the changes and unless you have something in writing promising you the same rate if you book it later I cannot see why they would concede as their terms allow them to change packages.

I`d say have at least 3 nights in Havana. Pick up on the night scene and street music. You can go into one of the smallest cafe bars and have a quiet drink. Suddenly a small musical group will come in and there`ll be a couple of old locals jumping up for a dance soon joined by loads of others. We picked up on a free concert in the Plaza Vieja. I happened to say I`d love to know what the are singing about and a young Cuban girl next to us began telling us the ideas behind and some of the key lyrics of the next few songs until we left to eat elsewhere. I met one chance one Sunday morning. I`d got up at around 7 - no internet working in the lounge (as per usual ) so wandered off into the back streets armed only with my camera and a small amount of money. met a guy with a crazy car who I knew was on the make but had a great chat about his car, his life as part time baseball coach and, after he`d offered me a source of cigars, women for my room ( !!! I told him my wife might not like it)  he said the bar near us offered the best mojitos in town. Unwisely I said why not as the custom  for Cubans was to have one before work! Sure enough the bar was busy with locals having their liquid breakfast before starting work. 2 hours later I`d had 2 mojitos, a local fire water,a discussion on Castro and how things were changing which would have been impossible due to spies  just months earlier before Fidel had stood down and a demonstration of dance and Cuban music styles courtesy pof my host and the bar owners wife. OK he didn`t treat me as he initially said he would (yeah some chance) but me treating him to his drinks as well as my own cost about £5 and it was money well spent. Quite the highlight of my trip. Yes my wife told me I`d been stupid on my return, half cut for breakfast but not once did I feel unsafe.  Lovely people.

I think it's down to yourselves what you want, every cruise you will find that some people rave about a cruise line or ship, while on the same cruise other people find so many faults you. Do wonder if they were all on the same cruise.
A holiday is what you make of it, be open minded and enjoy, don't read other people reviews of negative experiences.
Every cruise is a holiday to be enjoyed, in my opinion

I went on one some years ago but not with the bigger lines. Ours was a Louis Crystal cruise company which had hired in a Greek Islands ship and used imported Canadian food on board as Cuban food at that time was not good nor sources dependable. At the time we`d been warned against self drive and we soon saw why. At times poor roads and a lack of signposting meant a mystery trip was on the agenda! Cruising around the ports taking in Trinidad, Cienfuego and others I forget was magical. Cuba is fantsastic and we were lucky to see it before things started to change quite so much and before the crowds got there. Our worst stop was Montego Bay to take on Americans getting around the USA blocks at the time. Stick to Cuba and you`ll have a great time. We were just frustrated not to get more than a day visit at some stops as some of these places really need an overnight to take i the magic. best tip if you are starting fro Havana reject all attempts to put you out at Varadero or in town in the more touristy hotels  near the embassies. get a real downtown one and just take what comes. We stayed downtown  and it was magical sitting on the terrace watching the cars and wandering the streets feeling totally safe. Lovely people ad place - do it£

Had been on my list some years and so glad  I made it there. Thanks for your kind comments. I ordered a 140 page photobook before I left the UK for the trip on a Groupon deal. Whilst there I wondered if I would get enough photos to fill it. I reckoned I needed around 250-275 decent ones for a book. Shouldn`t have worried . I ended up with over 2000 pictures and after culling and editing still had more than enough to get them in. Should be here in the next week or so so hope they haven`t made a mess of the printing. Photobooks and videos are great ways of keeping the holiday alive as when the pictures sit on your hard drive they are rarely seen. I look forward to boring friends with the book 😉

Got back from this cruise and a stay in Vancouver recently. Fantastic time. Holland America Line have to be my favourite line ion terms of service and food. Was only bettered by a luxurious river cruise with Uniworld in our experience of sailing with P&O, Royal Caribbean and HAL once before. As for the venues themselves it was stunning and the memory of floating quietly in Glacier Bay watching the ice calve will stay with me for many years.
