I take both points but I would like to see some people hang around a little bit longer than they do. I have to agree with Terminator that a lot of these posts appearing on here for the competition show a tremendous wealth of knowledge from people that clearly have a great enthusiasm for cruising and have experienced a wide range of cruise ships and lines. It would be great to see them post more especially for providing advice to newcomers to the cruising world.

All this said about big ships, and demand for big pile them high, sell them cheap to cater for new breed of cruisers, having only used three cruise lines in over 30 years, I do not like big ships if over 2500 passengers I would not book.
One point is that the 6 star lines are small ships they sail into small places, they have been growing, and growing in demand, so that tells me not every cruises wants big floating high rise blocks.
    Just saying !!

Of course every generation will have their preferences but that generation eventually move on a generation and their preferences move on too .. heaven forbid I look at myself now and think OMG I'm turning into my mother  well that's probably a slight exaggeration but you get my drift,

The huge ships I believe provide a market for a certain age group and that age group will always be there, they and their preferences will change over the years ( we don't think at the time they will but trust me they do ) then what ?? the likes of Aurora/Oriana/Oceana will be long gone and if only large ships are being built will it be 'tough' take it or leave it  I don't think any cruise line would be so shortsighted not to realise those with the 'disposable income' are us 'oldies' and one day the younger generation will be asking for the same as us, just my opinion of course !!

Hi  I agree that the current trends in the holiday market will continue to evolve and it is possible that cruising will no longer be trendy.  Without doubt cruising as expanded rapidly over the last decade but it may not continue.  I assume that larger ships will continue to be built until the growth bubble bursts and then the cruise lines will decide whether to reduce the number in their fleets or build smaller ships.  River cruise lines have increased their capacity significantly in the last five which shows that they are confident that there is still a market for small vessels without all the frills offered by large ocean ships.

I'm sure a lot of the entries to the current competition are from members who contribute to Bolsover's Facebook page it doesn't make them any less eligible to enter than forum members, each plays it's part to Bolsover's success, some seem to prefer FB to forums so I don't suppose they will hang around after the competition ends but that is obviously acceptable to Bolsover.

Hi  I have booked a cruise for early next year on NCL Epic to the Caribbean with a pre-stay in Orlando. I accept that the recommended tips are more expensive than most cruise lines but I knew that and took this into account before booking.  Yes I will pay the full amount, if I was unwilling to do so I would have chosen a different cruise line to sail with.

And don't forget Voyages of Discovery, Voyages to Antiquity and Hebridean.

Step outside the UK companies and you have Azamara, Sea Dream Yacht Club, Regent Seven Seas, Crystal Cruises, Seabourn, Silversea, Paul Gauguin and I am sure a few more.

If they can do it, why can't the large main stream lines. After all, Azamara is part of Royal Caribbean and Seabourn is part of Carnival operated by Holland & America so why the difficulty!!!

First cruise, with 3 teenage sons and 2 grandparents. Absolutely fantastic from the moment we stepped aboard and were handed free bubbly. I remember looking down on Southampton docks thinking I can't quite believe I am here! Great youth club for the teens, lectures and movies for the adults and superb food. I was determined to find the "Westend Style Shows" naff and thought I might be able to just about enjoy them ironically, but I loved them too.
The best family holiday we have had and and a brilliant way to cater for the very diverse needs of a wide age range.

Hi  I have refrained from answering the question of tipping because it is a contentious issue, many on this forum say they tip because of the good service offered and/or to reward the under hard paid working staff.  Others believe that it is up to the cruise line to pay their wait crew a decent wage.  I pay the recommended tips (using the auto route as it's simpler). I agree that it would be more sensible to incorporate this fee in to the boarding fare.  It would have the added bonus for me as I wouldn't have pay extra for those who don't tip.  All the upmarket cruise lines include these in the boarding price and the level of service is far superior to that you get with P&O so maybe the level of satisfaction with the cruise experience may also be elevated and this wouldn't be a bad thing.

Would it not make more sense to remove the tipping, increase the fare and then allow discretionary tipping by the guests, it would then make the cruise operator more accountable to the staff for their wages, then those staff who go the extra mile would get further rewards from guests

Isn't that what I've been saying on every thread about the gratuities? In fact on my last post I believe that was my last sentence.

Yes HLM I'm afraid we are poles apart in our thinking.
Are you saying you don’t care about the staff?  I’m struggling to understand your logic. Isn’t it the better option for the people who care about the staff and pay the gratuities to continue cruising. Surely it should be the people who resent the policies of the cruise companies and the vast profits they make that should give up cruising. By withholding the gratuities they aren’t punishing the company but the hardworking people who expect to receive the gratuities.  If I ever decide I’m not happy with a company making a profit out of me I’ll stop cruising with that company.
BTW I don't worry about the welfare of the staff or their earnings because I never shortchange them. Meanwhile I look forward to the day when the gratuities system is done away with and they are included in the price of a cruise. Then you, I and the staff will all be happy.

So you feel sorry for people who shortchange the staff who wait on them hand and foot? Staff who are probably even poorer and who can only dream of taking a cruise. I know where my sympathies lie. As for calling people who do this tightwads I make no apology for that.

Precisely doca how many of us would miss a few extra ££ whether it be given as cash or a personal gift.

It actually comes quite easily to me as I have always been a giver rather than a taker.

I think you are incorrect there HLM at the time of the protest I don't believe P&O had introduced the auto gratuities so no monies were being held back based on their performance, we were on the previous cruise to this and I can tell you there were an awful lot of unhappy crew for whatever reason, one thing I am positive of though, we have never paid auto grats on P&O ( 4/5 years since we last sailed with them ) it has always been 'money in the envelope' which they got to keep.

Whatever decisions the cruise lines make to determine we 'the customer' indirectly contribute to the crew wages should be a fair way so how can you say it you pay £5000 for a cruise and someone else pays £5000 + gratuities they are not subsidising those who take them off lbh not all those who take them off will be putting cash in an envelope so in theory those who do leave them on are paying more therefore subsidising others.

With all due respect to you I do think I’m subsidising people. I’m sure we all know why P&O introduced auto-tipping. It was because the staff on the Arcadia 3/4 years ago?( I can’t quite remember), walked out because people were not paying the gratuities. What would happen if everyone decided to remove the auto-tips now? Of course not everyone will, which is exactly what P&O rely on. They rely on those people who can’t be bothered, or have a conscience, or don’t give it another thought to subsidise the people who are too mean, consider themselves too poor or are basically tightwads. I’m afraid that’s exactly how I see it.

Oh I'm not going to get into how well off the stewards are compared to the other people in their country of origin.

I'm quite aware no-one forces them to do the job but in my book I consider myself very fortunate that the cards dealt to me does not mean I have to spend 9 months of the year away from my family and that I'm also fortunate to be on a cruise ship as a passenger and not a worker so if that makes me patronising then yes I guess I am although how wanting to give someone a gift makes me arrogant I'm not quite sure.

You can try to pretend it isn't happening - P&O certainly aren't going to advertise how little they're paying, are they?  And, yes, you could just stop cruising.  But that's rather like telling people telling people not to buy M&S imported clothes because of the wages paid to those who make them.  Far better to try to influence companies like Carnival, by means of bad publicity like that in the Guardian so that they're forced to mend their ways - it can work.

Let's not forget, though - this thread is all about making a small gift to a poorly paid member of staff on Christmas Day.  Is that really such a big deal to anyone who can afford to cruise?

As regular Christmas cruisers we have always found a Christmas card with cash inside ( a personal gift and nothing to do with tipping ) is usually appreciated.
