Still get confused when people complain about when cruises used to be all inclusive food wise. When we first started cruising in 1997 there were no speciality restaurants or extra pay coffee shops but there was very little choice MDR/buffet or room service and that was your lot and the price of the cruises were a lot higher than what they are now without taking in inflation or higher costs i.e. oil, food, wages etc. If you expect to go on a cruise and have everything included in the price then I am afraid the price will increase considerably and I prefer lower cruise fares and choice because at the end of the day nobody forces you to eat in speciality restaurants or extra pay coffee shops you can still eat and drink in MDR/buffet and pay nothing extra to your cruise fare. I dare bet those that have never been in Epicurean/Sindhu  and other like restaurants on other cruise ships because of cost if they suddenly became inclusive of cruise fare they would be at front of the queue for booking. Sorry but you cannot have it both ways everything included and cheap cruise fares.

We both find overall people who cruise are usually friendly types. Including some Southerners?😂.
If we meet any single travellers we often tell them to join us if they wish, must be hard at times to fit in ...Davybe

I think I read your original post incorrectly as I thought you were looking for someone to share so I apologise for that otherwise I would have replied earlier.
We have been cruising over Christmas/New Year for the last 30 years it has become a way of life for us and is definitely our favourite time of year to cruise.
I am assuming as a single lady you probably prefer the convenience of sailing out of Southampton, as well as P&O Cunard also have two ships sailing from there this year .. QV going to the Canaries or QM2 going to New York/Caribbean, if you enjoy dancing then I would recommend Cunard as they have 'gentleman hosts' so you don't need a partner 😉 and even if you don't it's a good opportunity to learn, unlike my screen name might suggest I am not a dancer but I do love to sit and watch, I could give you a hundred reasons why Cunard might be for you but don't take my word for it give them a try I don't think you would be disappointed !!
I'm a bit of a Cunard fanatic so they would always be my first choice but I believe there are other cruise lines who sail from the UK so it might be worth looking at Fred Olsen or CMV, we haven't sailed with either but both seem to get very good reviews,  the only downside seems to be their ships are quite old but then sometimes 'old' can equate to 'charm'
I would say go for it if there is nothing to keep you at home and you will get a bit of sunshine into the bargain.

I can understand your wish to make new friends and not to travel alone, all I will say is travelling at the same time of year ( Xmas ) and especially with the same cruise line you seem to bump into the same people year after year so you soon get to know people, we have several single friends - all met on cruises and we look forward each year to meeting up with them.

It was a sad day when the Rhodes restaurants disappeared from P&O - Marco PW just wasn't the same imo !! agree the Tuscan Grill on Celebrity is excellent, we also liked the Verandah ( French ) on Cunard although this has recently changed and it is now a steakhouse, we tried it for the first time over Christmas and I have to say it was excellent with plenty of menu choice.

Princess Cruises including a new to them Speciality Restaurant ,which sounds really nice even at $35 pp .
Do you use the alternative Restaurants on your cruise, and which did you find the best.
Arcadian Rhodes was the best I ever ate at absolutely head and shoulders above any other place  I ate at.
We like P&Os Epicurean restauruants and try to go at least once on a cruise.
Celebrity we prefer Tuscan Grill some very nice steaks , The Chops grill on RCI very nice to though the steaks can be too big.....Davybe

And us .. we recently saw a comedian ( Jon Martin ) on QE and what a funny guy he was, no swearing ( very unusual today ) just good old fashioned humour, I haven't laughed so much in ages, they can keep the 'new wave comedy' and I'll stick to being 'old fashioned'

I don’t think it’s demographic it’s more traditional I don’t understand half of the young stand up so say comics goes over my head.
I find more slap stick or life observing more humorous Victoria Wood, Les Dawson style both sadly gone.

I think like a lot of reports in the media they only reflect the views of the writer, which is why you can get totally opposite reviews about the same programme.  However I do sometimes feel as though there is a capital culture slant on quite a few shows, especially new wave comedy which I generally think is rubbish, and yet the London luvvies suggest it is deep and meaningful!!!!

As a follow up on that issue, when cruising with Princess we always take up the £75pp ‘Future Cruise Deposit’ option because they will credit your onboard spend with a varying bonus amount, this will range from $15 to $150 per cabin depending on your cabin status and length of cruise. This is returnable if not used within 2 yrs.
The £75 can also be used as a cruise deposit when booking with Bolsover.
We did this in June 2017 when on Crown Princess in Norway, booking a future cruise to re visit the Baltic 2018 on Sapphire Princess but this time taking our youngest son and his wife with us.
At that time, Princess were offering a £1 pp deposit deal so we reserved two staterooms on Sapphire for the princely sum of £4, (which turned out to be extremely fortuitous for us)!
I’ll cut to the main event; Some time early in 2018 (i.e. some 6 months after our original reservation ) we were sent a brochure by Bolsover and the Baltic cruise we had booked with Princess was featured at a mouth watering £150 pp cheaper!!!
Obviously wanting this price I contacted Bolsover, they got in touch with Princess who told them if we did cancel then we would forfeit our deposit. Now the deposit you pay can vary, it can sometimes be your future cruise deposit, or 10% of the price, OR, luckily for us, in this case, it was just £4. Maybe the moral of the story is that unless you really want or must have a particular cabin or stateroom, don’t jump in too early. Not straightforward if you are working and need to fix your holiday dates. Of course, you can lose out by waiting until the last minute, but it may be well worth the gamble.
As it happens, we do favour a particular type of stateroom so always book early to get it but we knew when we cancelled and re booked they were available. Bolsover were excellent, did the cancel and re book simultaneously to ensure we retained our original staterooms.
Like you, I have seen some cruise deals that say if you book and there is a subsequent price reduction you will be given it, but I cannot recall seeing an offer like that from Princess.

We've always left the auto gratuities on and given extra tips in envelopes. The reason for this is we have no idea whatsoever who gets what. I've always wished that gratuities would be included in the price of the cruise.  I've always thought that would be the fairest way as whatever you are prepared to pay for your cruise is then up to you.  It's a little ironic that now we've tried Cunard and are unlikely to go back to P&O they are finally stopping the auto gratuities. Now we are faced with the same dilemma on Cunard. On our cruise last year we did the same as we've always done, left them on and still gave the butler, his assistant, the Maitre D, the Head waiter and the waiters extra. Quite honestly I did feel a little compelled to do this but would feel like a cheapskate if we didn't. I suppose some of you will think we are suckers but like Dancing Queen until I know for certain who gets what, which is unlikely we'll carry on being suckers.

I have always been quite (ok very !! )  vociferous in my opinion on auto gratuities and I fully supported them however on our recent back to back on Cunard I was informed by a very reliable source ( senior management ) that any gratuities given to dining/cabin stewards they are allowed to keep ... as we were part way through the first cruise I left the gratuities in place but decided to remove them for the second one.
I can't say I felt comfortable doing this especially if the stewards are aware who leaves them on and who removes them as I really didn't want them to think they would get nothing because this wasn't the reason I did it, we certainly didn't notice any difference in the service so I suspect they don't know, what I will say is the auto grats seem good value to me as we spent much more tipping individually than we do when Cunard decide on who gets what but on a positive those we wanted to reward I believe did get to keep it especially if our cabin stewards reaction was anything to go by ... it isn't something I would ever discuss with the stewards so I suppose I am still in the dark to what does actually happen.

Hi LesleyB. Not everyone goes on excursions - some folk explore on their own & some stay on the ship. The tour buses drop you off where they pick up at ship although some ports give the option of getting off in the town centre & making your own way back to the ship either on foot or on the shuttle bus if one is provided. On return to the ship we usually go for lunch (if it's a half day excursion) & afterwards there will be some activities which are listed in the ship's paper which you get the night before delivered to your cabin. Horizon (P & O's paper) lists activities throughout the day from early morning till late at night including the gym classes, dancing classes, lectures, quizzes, film times, deck game competitions, card & craft get together a etc. There will be plenty for you to do & most things you just turn up but again the paper will say if you need to book. Have a wonderful cruise.
