now most companies offer a coach service to Southampton the whole experience sailing from the UK is very easy & stress free. No flight delays, restricted luggage etc...

Why do some brain dead people think that's it's ok to put towels on sun beds and not use them I just wish that the cruise lines enforce their so called rule ie to remove all items after a period of time??????

First the bottom line .... it was a fabulous family holiday on a ship superbly focused to all ages from toddler to granddad. We are usually Grill level cruisers on Cunard and when it was mooted that the full family was going on the Independace I had more than a liytle apprehension. Would it be Butlins at Sea? Would there be any quiet areas? What would the standard of food be like? Was it true that one could never get a seat in the Windjammer buffet? etc, etc. I need not have worried as it was a truly memorable cruise and all the criticism I had heard about the ship and the people who sailed on her were arrant nonsense.

True we sailed on 14th October and so there were few school age children but there were quite a few under five like my grandchildren and they were treated royally at the various childrens clubs (which were amazingly free of charge and highly professional) and at dinner in the main dining room. The waiters ( Eduardo and George) were absolutely suberb in handling children and made serviette animals for them and anticipated their every need. The same was true of the cabin steward (Savitri) who made them towel animals and was so kind throughout. In fact the level of service and the positive and friendly attitude of all the ship's company was noteworthy throughout. So I must say was the standard and choice of food in both the main restaurant or the Windjammer restaurant, where incidentally we never had a problem finding a table and were instantly met by a steward with baby and booster seats. I particularly enjoyed the Asian section (called Jade) and the cold buffet area but there was ample choice for all tastes.

The ship itself is splendid and even in rough water it never seems to be affected. Main Street was like a town street and there were numerous food outlets, the majority of which were free but naturally if you wanted alcohol or such as Ben and Jerrys ice cream you paid the commercial rate. In addition I liked the Champagne bar, the Viking lounge with its Olive and Twist bar and its outstanding barman, Richard whilst the ladies enjoyed the spa and the kids enjoyed their arcade area and even the large playroom on Deck Two, with a variety of toys for the very young to play with, whilst the parents looked on (this was in addition to all the various organised activities for the children). In addition the H2O childrens bathing pool area was magnifiecent and meant they were away from the main pool which was reserved for the adults.

Yes there was an element of the Butlins... with Belly Flop contests, etc but I only knew about this from the TV in the cabin and such usually took place around the main pool, which I was happy to avoid. In fact it is such a huge ship that there was no problem in being able to do ones own thing and a wide variety of tastes were catered for and one could easiy avid what one didnt fancy and just do the things one did. This I suppose was the secret of the ship and why it is so family oriented. If one is active there is a Flow Rider surf machine, a climbing wall, a basketball court, a crazy golf area, ice skating and even a boxing ring. As to restaurants there are speciality venues where one pays a nominal charge in addition to all the free outlets. We wen to Chops Grill one night and the best compliment I can pay it, is that it is of the ame standard as the Gaucho chain, where one would be paying a considerable amount more. In addition one day we went as a family to Johnny Rockets for lunch, a 1950's US diner and we had a ball of a time. The music was from the era and the staff danced in unison and it was a raucous, fun atmosphere although the food was not the healthiest but who cares...you are on holiday.

We also liked the Canaries itinerary and also stops at Vigo, Lisbon and the lovely La Coruna. One of the highlights was the family trip on a shore excursion to Loro Park which was like SeaWorld and had wonderful dolphin, seal and killer whale shows, amongst ther things. The younger members also went on a couple of beach trips in Lanzarote and Grand Canaria and thoroughly enjoyed these, whilst the real oldies tended to focus on the food and wine of the various islands and also had a great time.

So in summary, the whole family had a great time on a great family orientated ship, manned by a superb family friendly crew ..... if you are a grandparent and had any doubts, I hope the above has gone some way to dispelling them, as I could not recommend it more and I was a total sceptic.

My usual agent is great, as stated on the other post, my TA always goes the extra mile, she knows what i want, where i want my cabin to be, and all my requests. Its not about 'extras' its about good service, something that we dont get much of any where these days.

I couldnt agree more. I only have to tell my agent the cruise number i want, she knows exactly the cabin loaction and deck that i like. she knows exactly that i am a vegetarian and to also request a bed guard for my daughter. I just simply gve her the deposit and its booked withing minutes. I personally too have had a nightmare booking online, the site i used wouldnt allow me to request the bed guard, and it took me forever to search for a good cabin. My agent is amazing and i would never dream of doign the leg work myself when she does an amazing job

Always safer to use an agent with ABTA back up.
It is ok to book direct with a cruise line and if everything goes according to plan that's fine BUT if something goes wrong with your trip / cruise it is best to have the back up of a good travel agent to fight your corner.
When the Icelandic ash cloud struck in 2010 thousands of holidaymakers ( myself included) had their travel plans/ cruises disrupted. Fortunately I had booked with an agent who handled all my refunds via Celebrity for me without problem. Then with the quick refund obtained by my agent I was able to get on another cruise from Southampton.
We were unable to fly from the Uk to join our Celebrity ship in the US, others were not so fortunate as myself.
You just never know when the unforeseen will happen .....who would have thought a volcano in Iceland would cause so much disruption! Lots of people who had done their own arrangements lost money.
Sometimes it is best to play safe ..and have the back up of an Agent It certainly made me think twice !

I've just recently booked a 12 night canaries cruise with P&O, the same cruise I went on 8 years ago at a similiar time of year. I have paid less than a third of what I did 8 years ago. Therefor I would never expect to recieve the same 'extras' as what I received back then. How can anyone expect champagne on a beer budget??

I can see where you're going with this argument, but I'd say this more applies to non-smokers.
You, as a smoker, can use all of the same facilities (including your balcony) as non-smokers.  If you're allowed to smoke on your balcony then adjacent non-smokers (who may have asthma or other respiratory issues) cannot use their balcony.
