GiGi got a reaction from Davybe in Grand Harbour hotel
    Hi,
We are currently in the cruise lounge at the above hotel having stayed overnight with their 'ultimate cruise package'.
Anyone thinking of forking out the £295 for this you may like to reconsider.
Ok the rooms are nice and the beds are good but the three course dinner was mediocre to say the least. Also, the glass of champagne they say you get is sparkling wine. We know this because we had just bought two glasses of champagne in the bar prior to going into the restaurant. Very naughty I think.
Customer service is nigh on non existent, from waiting to go into the restaurant both at dinner and breakfast to not seeing a soul in the cruise lounge until we went looking for someone.
The location is handy but should we decide to cruise again we will do things a little differently.

We’ve just come back from a Viking Ocean cruise and I think they’ve got it about right. The drinks are included at meal times, there is no charge for the speciality restaurants, teas and coffees are free all day as is 24 hour room service. There is an included excursion in each port if you want it but optional ones at very reasonable prices too. Tips are also included.
The bar prices were very reasonable, we’ve never had such a tiny bill at the end of a holiday. When we did the northern lights cruise with P&O by the time we’d paid for excursions and everything else it added up to a considerable amount. I know some will say there is big difference in price between the two companies but trust me you could see the difference in the quality and to be honest when we added up what we ended up spending with P&O there wasn’t much in it.

We have just returned from a two night end of cruise extension in Venice and like you HLM our feeling was ‘nice but seen it now’. I know some people who keep going time after time and can’t quite get it.  With regards to the tourists, I think the restaurants would miss the €195 for two mains, one desert and a bottle of wine!

I enjoyed Jane’s show I think she’s very entertaining, ok I could without the busting into song at the end but never mind. We have some friends that recently did New Zealand and Australia on a cruise and they loved it, they now want to go back and spend more time in the places they enjoyed the most.

    Hi,
All I can say to is if you add up what you eventually spend on a cruise where you are paying out every two minutes and be honest about the quality then booking a Viking cruise should be a no brainier.
I’ve said to people since my return that we have many lovely places where we holiday that have an array of very nice restaurants but at the end we always come back craving something we couldn’t get (usually with me it’s vegetables) but this holiday had everything we wanted.
Go on, choose an itinerary and book it !

We have booked with Viking (I know, don’t go there,  we’ve not been back a week yet! ). In comparison to others we saw they are not big ships so hopefully we can dock in the city.

There isn’t much chat on here about Viking Ocean Cruises, well we’ve just been on one and it was absolutely fantastic. We did the Empires of The Mediterranean from Athens to Venice and we can not fault one thing. Our only other cruise was on the Oriana, the Viking Star is about the same size ship but has half the passengers so the whole experience was just amazing.
The food was five star restaurant quality, the food at the buffet was the same quality,  the difference in experience  from the Oriana buffet was you always had a seat, the food never ran out and it was calm and serene.
Yes the initial pay out isn’t cheap but they don’t charge you for every tiny thing once onboard. They are happy for you to bring drinks onboard, we had a bottle of Gin for the room and they gladly brought ice and lemon for us to enjoy a drink on the balcony. The speciality restaurants are included as are drinks with lunch and dinner. We have never had such a tiny bill at the end of a holiday.
Should we fancy another cruise we both have said that Viking will be the only company we will go with.

The fjords are beautiful and you will see them in a different way in the summertime to when it's  looking like a film set for Game of Thrones. Of course though the lights are a seasonal phenomenon and are not guaranteed to show up. We were lucky and saw them in force but the next night the people who went on the trip had thick cloud and saw nothing.
We really went to see the lights as it was on the bucket list but we had to tell ourselves that we couldn't just make the cruise all about that as it would have been a lot of money for a disappointment had we not seen them. Norway is beautiful, very clean and very expensive but we would go back in the summer and hope to see the waterfalls that were literally frozen in time in full flow.
You will love it but you do need to be fully kitted out with Arctic appropriate clothing if you go in winter.

    Hi,
We did the Northern Lights cruise on Oriana at the end of Feb 2016. We had a midship balcony cabin and would not have done it any other way. We lost count of the number of times in a morning or some other time we were in the cabin when one of us would shout 'come and look at this!' And we would dive on to balcony to see something beautiful. Many a time I'd be in my nighty with my big coat on! Those are things you would miss not having a balcony.
The plus point of midship is should the sea get a bit choppy you don't get so much movement. We were very lucky, even the Captain said he had never seen the North Sea that calm.
    Go on, treat yourself.

Well so far we have been very happy with Viking's service. The advice we got from them at the booking stage was excellent. We go next May but  yesterday we had a call from a lady who sorts out the flights and she has got us exactly what we wanted re times, preferred airport and a good deal on business class seats. Within minutes of the call we had the documentation and were able to choose our seats. Let's hope this continues throughout the entire process.

    Hi,
We have splashed out and booked a cruise on the Viking Star for next May. It starts off in Athens and takes in a couple of Greek islands before doing the Dalmatian coast and ending up in Venice where we will tag on two extra days.
We just happened to catch the Jane McDonald show which featured a Viking ship and were totally seduced!
Any of you been on one of the Viking ocean ships?

Thank you for posting that Davybe. It was good to be pre advised about the storage but we will work around that.
Its great to know you can get a hot breakfast on room service, the Oriana did not serve any hot food what so ever on room service. We will also enjoy being relative teenagers if the average age is 70!
We are really looking forward to it and also the extended stay at the Hilton in Venice.

    Hi,
We did this cruise in Feb 2016 and trust me, if you want to make sure you don't waste your money take suitable clothing. We invested in proper Arctic wind proof coats, trousers, mitts and hats plus boots that were thermal up to -45 and when we were stood out for over four hours waiting and watching the lights they were worth every penny. There were many individuals who paid for the trip and had to go back to the ship as they were so cold and missed everything. A knitted hat and the sort of coats we get away with here are no good up there. When we were in Tromso a girl was literally in tears on the shuttle bus because she was so cold, she was also dressed inappropriately with jeans, fashion boots and just a Kagoole type jacket and scarf.
We went on the husky sledge trip and enjoyed every minute but when we got back to the base for refreshments people were complaining that it was too cold for that sort of excursion!
It was a memorable cruise and yes the trips are expensive but we enjoyed them as when ever we left the ship we were totally unaffected by the temperatures.

GiGi got a reaction from PamelaD in Balamoral Hit By Norovirus Again
Norovirus is spread by people who do not wash their hands after going to the toilet, this includes the people who call dipping their fingers into a dribbling tap 'hand washing'. They then touch things like door handles, stair rails, serving utensils in buffets and who ever touches it after them will either get the bug and or spread it further. I was impressed how on our recent cruise on the Oriana they were fastidious about making people use the hand sanitiser before going into the restaurants and when getting back on the ship. They also put a notice up in the toilets telling you to wash your hands and use a paper towel to open the door as you left. However you would have to have staff constantly wiping every touchable serface 24/7 to combat people with poor hygiene habits. After falling victim to this bug years ago I am OCD about it and I always carry Clinel wipes wherever I go. I will go over a hotel room with them before doing anything else and wipe all around the seating area on an aeroplane along with restaurant tables and cutlery! I also will not eat cold food outside of my home. Yes I know it may sound a bit much but I never want to experience the three days of hell that Norovirus is again.

If you fancy a steak dinner while in Norway be prepared for a £50 per person check. We looked at the menus outside a few restaurants in Tromso and a decent steak averaged out at about £52 ! I hope they were nice.

    Hi,
We were in Norway at the end of Feb beginning of March. At the top of the country it was -18 but even along the fjord at Stavanger the wind was bitterly cold. We were so glad we invested in proper cold weather gear as it earned its money big time !
You would hope that the temperature would have picked up a bit but I would be prepared for it to be pretty cold.
The scenery is stunning and seeing the waterfalls frozen in time was amazing. Go on give it a go.

We have had two, week long holidays on Santorini staying in Oia and in my opinion that is the best way to enjoy the atmosphere that is special to the island and in particular that village. On our first day we walked into the centre of Oia and it was bedlam, you couldn't see the buildings for crushes of people. The next day we went again and was utterly serene. If we were going to a restaurant in the evening we would wait till all of the sunset viewing buses had gone and everything was calm again.
We are planning to go back next year to our favourite cliff side cave house as it's just so lovley.

GiGi got a reaction from HLM in Missing Luggage
This may be a tricky situation. We used the baggage handling company with no problems at all. I did seek advice re insurance as one of our cases had all of our arctic gear in which was worth far more than the amount they include as standard. I spoke with my own insurance company to see if they covered our luggage and they said if your luggage is not in your personal control then they do not cover it so trying to claim through your own insurance may not bear fruit.
I would check with the baggage handling company to see if they get any form of receipt or signature when they hand over cases as proof of delivery and also with the cruise company to see if they have proof of only accepting one case.
    Good luck.
