We usually eat lunch in ports. Always read menu carefully lookout for'table charge' 'cover charge' 'service charge' 'bread charge' 'entertainment charge'. We have walked away from some restaurants when these are mentioned in the small print. Most expensive meal we had was 45 euros for a seafood banquet with bottle of wine, bottle of water, dessert and coffee . In Venice there are some reasonably priced restaurants just a little way from St Marks.Last time we asked a local market trader for recommendations and had a lovely Spaghetti Vongole  and glass of white wine -under £10 for 2 of us , we were the only non-Italians there. Cappuccino in a little Venician square was just over 1 euro.  In Portofino everything is super expensive, but order 2 Spritz in the right bar they may be 10 euro's each but they come with so many free snacks /salads you don't need lunch.

Really good idea, service charge was creeping up, probably to make up for all the people who remove it. Now some people will not be paying to cover others who refuse. Nothing to stop us giving a small tip for excellent service which is how it should be. I have been feeding this back to P&O for several years now , glad they have made this decision.

yes basically the £7 daily discretionary service charge is no more from may 2019.
i would imagine prices will reflect this but i dont have a problem with that so long as its reasonable.
ive long said its what they should do its the fairest solution to the problem of the nontippers.

Unfortunately this is a trend in many areas of business. I was a retail manager for 25 years and we only ever got one complaint. A gentleman said he wanted a case (6) of a particular wine that was on offer,  we were unable to order stock and were allocated one case, which a customer bought  within a few minutes of delivery so when said gentleman wanted to buy a case 8 hours later there was no stock. He kicked off a fuss with our HO and was duly sent £30 in vouchers. He came into the shop gloating he didn't want the offer in the first place just thought it was a good thing to complain about and get some money back. He boasted he had got over £10,000 back from companies by complaining.

As the original poster could have reached platinum level on Princess without going on a Princess cruise. I would see this as a valid question. If this is the case just show your ticket as you arrive at the terminal and they will direct you to the correct place.

I have just noticed this thread. Is it just me or should the increase be announced in advance before people have booked their cruise? It is like issuing a price increase even if is is relatively small in comparison to the price of the cruise.I wouldn't have any issue if when you went to book they told you the gratuities would be £5 pppn but to state £3.95 pppn when you book and increase it afterwards seems a little underhand.

Last time I was in Madeira I didn't do an excursion as such but got a hoho bus which went to Camara de Lobos and also had the option to get a mini-bus tour from there to Cabo Girao, where there is a walkway on the cliff edge with magnificent views.  There is a tourist market and cafe up there too.  There was also plenty of time for a lunch on the harbourside at Camara de Lobos.  I really enjoyed my day there.

We have done this a couple of times via CC roll calls Sheila and it works very well or has for us, as you say it doesn't have to go beyond the tour but nice if you do meet someone you have a lot in common with, I was very apprehensive the first time we shared but then thought it is no different to any other tour just fewer people and what's the worst that can happen .. you don't get on !! fortunately the people we have teamed up with were all charming but at the end of the day if they weren't all we have to do is share transport with them.

We have shared some excellent and inexpensive private tours arranged through the CC roll calls.  Our involvement with others has not gone beyond the tours, nor has this been expected.  The only exception was when we met a couple with whom we had a lot in common.  They live about 100km from us so we have kept in touch and meet occasionally for lunch at a midway point.

We bought P&O bathrobes a few years ago, but I am always scared when we use them that the cabin steward will think they belong to P&O and remove them. Carried the receipt with us for a few cruises but the print has now faded.

OWT makes a good point. My other reason for enjoying smaller ship cruising over the years is that despite my preference being for larger ships due to the facilities, smaller ships do have a warmer welcome to them in my opinion. You are much more likely to bump into the same people, you're also more likely to be looked after by the same crew members, who in return learn your name too, as well as your drink preferences. It is a more intimate cruise experience in my opinion and many people love that so you can't just state that bigger ships are best.
I like to mix it up and enjoy different cruising experiences. Hence my enjoyment of both larger and smaller ships.

There are over 300 different cruise ships sailing the oceans from huge down to miniature. It's all about what you like. I enjoy all size of ships but for different reasons. Each to their own but one thing worth remembering is that some of the older smaller ships have deeper draughts and will therefore ride the swells better. When the wind catches the modern high, flat sided ships they can roll like a drunk and yes I am talking from experience, ships rolling that is . Just my opinion as always.

Many of the staff come from Goa . Check online the average wage , It is £1.50-£2 a Day. A professional accountant architect or similar is paid around £1500 per year.  This probably explains why they are so eager to be away from home for 9 months. What seems very little to us means they and their families can live very well at home. A friend for many years took his wife, 3 children and his parents to a 5* South Pacific resort for Christmas and New Year. They live in a beautiful house with swimming pool, he is paying for university education for his children, his wife has never worked. His job for the last 25 years- cruise ship waiter.

Have visited several times on cruise ship stops, 2nd largest island in the Med. A good way to explore from Cagliari is by the ‘Little Train’ which is not far from where the shuttle bus drops you off. It takes you out of the city to the Napoleon Memorial then back through the old town onto the coast road across the island past the famous cemetery and affluent areas to the little church and museum. By the time you arrive back you will be in no doubt that Napoleon had an influence on the island.
The main square where the Little train starts and terminates has many bars, cafes and restaurants most of which have excellent 'Free' wi-fi'.

We have done 3 Baltics cruises, found SPB tours in St Petersburg the best option there, after 2 cruises using ships tours. Copenhagen, Stockholm, Oslo, Tallin  are all easy to do on your own. The German ports and Gdansk you need a tour. Tip for Stockholm use HOHO boat instead of HOHO bus. Stops are almost the same but the boat is a lot quicker ( no traffic jams) and more scenic.

As we cruise October-Nov each year we have been to a few remembrance services at sea, they are always very well attended. The one I will never forget was when we were docked in Malta and all the rear decks were packed with passengers and the cliff side beside the ship packed with local Maltese who sang along with the hymns, observed the 2 mins silence and a local boy played the last post. When the ship sailed at the end of the service the Maltese all saluted as the ship left the dock.

Crafty photographers had set up by the queues for embarkation. The people who had their photos took were passed to two security stations with small queues, the people who didn't had to join the one long queue for a single security station.

Would not the simple answer be to do away with gratuities altogether and just leave passengers to tip in the same way as they do in hotels. Problem of course with that is, the staff rely on the tips to make up their wages and it would mean the cruise lines having to pay a proper wage. How silly of me to even think it.

Rhodes is a walled medieval town easily walked from the dock, or Lindos is worth a trip. Mykonos is also a pleasant port if you don't have free shuttle there is a shuttle boat from the dock to town quay- 1 euro last year. Katakolon is a real tourist trap, if you want to go to Olympia there is a local train or a bus from Katakolon 4 euro's. There is a HOHO tourist train that runs from Katakolon town to a local beach and to a winery. Hope this helps.

black and white and tropical are our limits, but i have noticed increasing numbers of people don't even bother with these now. less than half the men wore bright shirts on tropical night and most women just dressed as normal. On black and white night a few years ago everyone wore black and white- now only about 80% .
