Of course the auto tips comes off your On Board Credit so that you start earning discount on your purchases earlier than if you delete the tips and pay dirextly

I am just a bit of a luddite Sammy.  I do have a smart-phone (which I only use for calls/texts and the odd bit of internet access) a laptop and a tablet.  BUT, give me a proper book with pages, an old-fashioned menu at dinner and a waiter to serve my wine, not a robot

I do wish all these lines - and half the rest of the world - would stop obsessing over the latest technological advance.  The last thing I want is to wear some chunky plastic wrist-band on my cruises.

june63 got a reaction from Jack7374 in What Should The Dress Code Be?
I see that a recent survey suggests that 70% of cruisers want the cruise lines to re-introduce formal wear throughout their ships.
I certainly am of the opinion that any dress code should be enforced rather that just recommended and that everyone should comply - if they dont agree then choose another ship.
With baggage weight limits being enforced I think that cutting out the "semi formal" wear may be an option
    Just my opinion

It's very nice to see a non critical review.
I agree wholeheartedly about the Oriana - one of our favourite ships

We were on Arcadia in August doing the Iceland and Baltic Capitals and there were a lot of men who obviously felt at home wearing jacket and collar & tie, in fact one gentleman at our table wore nothing else but semi formal at evening dinner.
I fully intend to keep up my standards and don't care if P & O are reducing theirs

Well what a disapointing damp squib that was. Load of hype ended up with a very poor quality "live" video on Facebook, poor lighting, poor sound and everybody seemed as if they had been at the free booze. Sorry but nothing was anounced to excite me into booking a future cruise with P&O on any of the ships even "the big one". Just returned from Britannia and entertainment was good, food in MDR was good, food in buffet i.e. lunch, midnight snacks appalling and the beefburgers from the Lido Grill were the worst ever tasted didnt even eat 50% of it and who thinks its a good idea to start blanching frozen french fries at 9-30 in a morning when Lido Grill doesnt open until 11am god knows what time they cook beefburgers and put them in greaseproof paper on warming plate ready to serve. Sorry but think this will be my last cruise in foreseable future with P&O already got 2 booked with Cunard and looking for my next cruise with Princess. Shame because we started cruising with P&O in 2000 and had some great cruises but since Carol Marlow left and new management were shipped in from local bingo hall P&O have really gone downbank.

Any new ship for P&O what ever size they build it, needs a proper promenade deck that can be walked right round the ship.

P&O could you please have a promenade deck where non smokers could sit  after dinner in the evening and not be surrounded by stale tobacco and fag ends.

Oriana - I and my friends are Oriana Groupies - we love her.  She was the first ship my husband and I cruised on
in 2001.  Have been on her sister Aurora which is also good but not as good as ORIANA.  Sue, Plymouth

NO Cruise Chef - it is done ashore now and depending on how many gates the immigration personnel man will determine how long it takes.
They take your fingure prints and photgraph your eyes now and it all takes time
Charleston took up to 8 hours
    New Orleans 20 minutes
    New York about 30 minutes

A lot will also depend on the size of the ship - it is pot luck

I don't think they bother to read these posts any more, but I couldn't agree with you more Arcadia is big enough for us. I still like the Oriana though

Passengers on our cruise last month used Alla Tours who seem to be very reputable and I have heard one called SPB as well. Have a look in 'Trip Advisor' and see what they come up with. You can't go all that way and stay on the ship, We did 2 ships excursions 1 was St Petersburg Panoramic and the next day we did Peter & Paul's Fortress + a sail on the Neva which was excellent.
Alla and SPB seemed to use 16 seater mini buses which looked quite comfortable
It is a lot easier getting into Russia than it is the USA - a couple of minutes and you're in,

We always use Eavesway and cannot fault them. Remember Cruise Connect do not own any coaches, they are a branch of Tui (Thomsons) and all coaches are sub contracted. Eavesway have a fleet of very comfortable coaches and and are in constant touch with each other on the way down, We left Glasgow at 3-30 am and were in our cabin by 2-20 pm. Couldn't have done it much quicker by car, Have no hesitation in recommending them, never had a problem in the last 6 years

We were told exactly the same on our last cruise but I would ask the question "What happens if the passengers do not fill in a questionaire?"
We always cancel the auto tips and hand over cash. At least that way we know that the tips went to the person deserving them. What happend after that is not our problem. We also heard that waiters in 'Freedom Dining' dont get any tips at all and that is why they rotate between dining rooms.

I beg to differ that all the people in Russia on their own homes. There has been a lot of money into Russia these last few years and some have made a lot of money but the majority working class people are in the same situation than they have been for decades and live in apartments, some only one room, owned by the state

What has the tax element got to do with tipping? Everyone should declare their earnings if it is a requirement. The whole point is if you feel you have had goid or excellent service then reward it else do not tip. It is how the system works.

We spent a week in SPB in 1988 and although the holiday was organised by Intourist there were no restrictions placed on our movements what so ever. We were free to go where ever we wanted and in fact we got lost on the Metro at one stage and were 13 stops away from where we wanted to go. With a little bit of sign language and bowing and scraping we managed to get back to our hotel, but it was quite and experience. In those days they didn't open the shops until there was a queue outside and whilst a lot of the natives looked dour when it came down to the bit they were very pleasant and eager to learn about the west. We had a great holiday in the USSR with a week in Moscow, a week in Odessa, a week in Yalta and a week in Leningrad (now SPB). Things haven't changed too much in the last 28 years.

We have cruised on Oriana quite a few times and have not encountered many of the problems talked about on this thread.
Now, if you were to talk about the Adonia then I could understand it, buckets in the cinema to catch the water coming through the ceiling, plumbing problems, non flushing toilets etc etc etc. It is the response of P & O staff that matters as much as anything else
