We cruise a lot with P&O and I must defend them. Having worked in the hospitality industry I always treat the crew as I would like to be treated myself. I can say we have never had bad service on the contrary it has been good. We always use the crows nest on Arcadia for our pre dinner drinks all we have to do is walk onto the room and our drinks arrive.
The people who moan and talk to the staff like they are servants get what the deserved. These people moan about everything not just P&O cruises.
You are on holiday so just enjoy it.

regardless of peoples individual preferences the cruiselines have made a rod for their own backs by not being transparent  about what  happens to tips/service charge. there are so many rumours about staff being penalised for less than perfect feedback scores and cash tips being pooled etc.
if a staff member is getting poor feedback scores that is a HR/disciplinary matter the cruiseline should not be docking wages even if they come from tips/service charges.
the rumour mill and lack of transparency is one problem and the seeming unwillingness of cruiselines to change and pay their staff a decent flatline and build it into the cruise cost is another. untill that changes we will continue to have these debates.
i have no problem how people pay their tips/service charge cash or auto the people i have a problem with are those that do neither, and yes i appreciate technically its "voluntary" but come on be fair.

personally i think they should just pay their staff a living wage and put it in the cost of the cruise it would save all this hassle.
at least that way the tight wads that refuse to tip at all will have to pay their share. and dont tell me all those that are queing the minute they get on board to get tips removed from their account  all pay cash.
also it may mean the staff get paid enough to put up with the moaning and downright ignorance/rudeness of some ive seen as passengers on p&0. someone should tell them the raj  died a long time ago.
personally i leave it on the onboard account and if someone excells i will add something in cash.
but at the endof the day ive better things to worry about.

ive never found "duty free" electricals particularly reduced compared to prices in shops or online.
i think once many years ago i found a 2 for one offer on a laptop speaker that was good, i bought it and used the "spare" as a xmas present.
dont get me started on dixons/pc world etc in general i reckon they are a monopoly/con. they invent prices and "deals" that arent.

it was also obvious in october that the deck 9 group were well known to the staff and were singularly avoided even ignored by the staff. so they must have been doing it for a while. they werent a family group but just seemed to have come together over the years from what i could glean for whatever reason they all went on one of arcadias 20 odd night october cruises and became pals or whatever. but the contest seemed to be who had the most obc left in the last week.
mind they did struggle to get served to spend it which i admit i did chuckle about.

i do think they should include it in the price of the cruise that way everyone pays the same and it should work out less as i am sure the current increase in part at least is to make up for those that dont pay the full amount or anything at all and i am sure theres a few who dont.

noro virus can happen anywhere at anytime. its more noticeable and inconveniant whenit appears in hotels and cruise ships due to the concentration of people it can spread very quickly but its not the fault of the hotel/cruiseship. everyone carries and comes into contact with many microbes and viruses most of the time they do no harm. its usually the elderley and people with an already compromised immune system that are affected. as towny44 says simple basic hygene precautions will usually be enough to protect you. certainly any cruise i have been on they have pushed the hand gels and even had staff stopping people as they enter restaurants to give them gel. but primarily it must be up to individuals to follow advice given. trouble is the compensation culture has meant individual responsibility has gone out of the window. 50 sick people on a cruise of thousands is hardly a major outbreak whilst unpleasant for those ill its not a major outbreak. noro usually in a fit person will only result in a jippy tummy and its associated unpleasantness for 48 hrs or so. whilst not nice during a holiday its not the end of the world.

i just dont get the need to take your own booze on board. if i wanted to splash out on a cabin with a balcony i can understand the attraction of a sundowner but if i am paying that much extra to get a balcony i reckon i could afford room service or something from the inroom fridge/bar. the saving in terms of money bringing your own booze on board cant be huge.
ive never understood the people who pay extra to get a balcony and then spend the entire cruise pennypinching. there were loads on the 24 nighter i went on in oct they paid for a balcony then spent the entire cruise on deck 9 by the pool getting all their drinks from the buffet on deck 9.  i assume the rest of their time on the balcony with their own booze.they were all comparing how low their on board account was they only paid for drinks in the last week when they realised they had obc left.

the trouble with any policy designed to stop something the barrack room lawyers all come out from under their stones with a pile of what ifs and maybes.
when any sensible person can see what is the clear intention of a particular restriction. but from a pr point of veiw the cruiselines lawyers get involved and you end up with a fudge.
really what they should have put was:
no alcohol to be brought on board and no stags/hens with lude t-shirts etc getting legless and upsetting other passengers.

its a personal thing whichever you prefer, i use the fixed dining mostly so i get to know the people that serve me so to speak. so i tip personally rather than via the automated system if they then opt to pool that its their decision. and usually i tip more than they auto tip anyway so it doesnt worry me. and ive never had any adverse reaction to opting out of the auto system.
