well i am not sure how to describe this one xenophobia or down right cantacorous old sod.
went to buffet last night as i wanted to go to the early show and i am on 2nd sitting. loveley spread italian theme.
rolls etc plus a huge selection of italian meats beutifully arranged.
an older gentleman i use the term loosley collared a waiter and demanded ham, boiled ham english ham.
getting louder and more irate, the i assume restaurant manager hearing some of this tried to intervene and explain it was an italian theme.
i wont go into the rest of the mans rant but i was embarrassed to be british.
cant beleive these dinosaurs still exist. just because your old doesnt mean youve earned the right to be a ****.
the staff were highly professional and even sent  someone to get his ham. personally i would have shoved it down his throat and thrown him overboard.

    OMG BACK SEAT NAVIGATORS NOW
lol today the capt came on at noon with his usual update. apparently he has been contacted by concerned passengers asking what hes doing regarding tropical storm ophelia which is 300 miles south of us.
poor bloke then had to explain ITS 300 MILES AWAY.
hes sailing away from it not towards it and at the worst it may get a bit lumpy around midnight but thats as much as it will affect us.
my god i feel for the crew.
what do these people do all day. your on holiday for gods sake.
thank goodness the drink of the day is a double pina colada.
i think i am going to stock up lol.

i assure you i am not making this up.
we docked in the azores this morning.
last night the sea was a mill pond and i was sat outside the east bar puffing on my e-cig, bacardi etc in hand enjoying the most glorious sunset.
the ship was practically stationary all was well with the world.
this couple came out, she sniffed oh its a smoking area all huffy and hubby says "its hardly moving, if he put his foot down we could have docked tonight"
about turned and went back to the bar.
i nearly had an accident. lol.
back seat drivers as well. tee hee

ok i accept i am now guilty of exactly what is rapidly ruining a perfectly good cruise.
i am on the arcadia 24 nights to/from southampton to the carribeaan. paid £3k just over for an inside cabin at the bottom of the ship but its fine.
the cruise so far 3 days at sea, fairly calm pleasant weather all is good with the world plentiful and good food and drink no complaints then you would think.
omg the one thing that is driving me to the brink is the constant and i mean CONSTANT whinging of other passengers.
"standards arent what they used to be"
"wasnt like this when noah was in charge."
"my egg was 2 degrees colder than yesterday"
"ive cruised 2 zillion times with p&o i want an upgrade i dont care if your full."
"the bed was folded down 2 degrees off centre"
"smokers shouldnt smoke in the smoking areas i want to sit on that side of the deck move the entire smoking area"
"why should i pay for that, in the 50's that was free"
"i know the captain i want (inset your own demand)."
ive seen the comments on here about "p&o moaners" but my god theyre worse in real life.
honestly i would really not reccomend a P&O cruise to anyone not because of the company or the ship or anything to do with the product.
    the customers are a nightmare.

i think its a very british thing as tipping hasnt been a huge part of our psychy.
whereas in the states and other places it has always been a part of the culture.
as with the anger over restaurants etc keeping some if not all of  tips i think people do rightly get upset if tips do not get to the individuals they are intended for.
as for auto tips i think this has been introduced as some seem to refuse to tip anyone either on principle or because thay are simply too tight.
some individuals ive met on cruises seem to have the life mission to have a zero on board account and spend no money whatsoever.
on one cruise back in the nineties one guy would turn up in a bar with a coffee from the outdoor buffet area and go and get refills through the night i kid you not. he said i dont drink alcohol so why should i pay bar prices for soft drinks and coffee when they are free upstairs.
i leave the auto tips simply as a cost of the cruise. if i then feel someone has gone above and beyond i give cash personally at the end and tell them not to pool it. hopefully it then stays with who it was intended for.

at last after several weeks of searching its booked.
a little background to the issues that caused such a prolonged decision. i am a widower so the first issue the dreaded single supplement. i havent done a cruise for some time or even booked a brochure holiday for the last 10 years i have booked a flight and arranged my own hotel and saved at least a thousand pounds on a fortnights holiday to destinations that can provide some sun.
however earier this year i damaged my already arthiritic knees so any flight over an hour or so is out of the question hence the search for a cruise from a uk port.
additionally i am one of the lepers that smoke albeit now an electronic version so it brings its own restrictions, combined with the inability to stand for more than 10 minutes i needed to find out if there were seats available in smoking areas or if you were relegated to a pontoon towed behind the ship. so emails were necessary to cruiselines. and following said emails it seems additional info has appeared regarding smoking areas on some p&o ships.
the weekend has been spent preparing and repairing baggage etc and the first practice pack has started, the aim to get enough in for a 24 night cruise and keep the bag below 23kgs.
the main bag will commence the holiday before me on the 3rd oct with the baggage company as i dont fancy battling the rail system with a large bag, a walking stick and a rucksack.
for £72 return it seems a no brainer, and the rail fare wasnt bad just over £100 return from chesterfield with an upgrade to first class down to southampton.
so the boxes are getting ticked the list of washing and dry cleaning is complete, ironing all but the last load done. the self travelling bag is almost packed for the first time, initial weigh in will be on wed/thurs, then the task of slimming it down will begin to get to its target weight for the 3rd. do i really need that hawaian shirt or that second bottle of sunscreen.

this is the text of the email i received.
"Following the recent hurricanes, the vast majority of ports in the Caribbean are still open and thankfully unaffected. Across the Caribbean, 43 of the region’s estimated 48 ports are fully operational today, having received minimal or no damage from the storms. However, five of the ports that P&O ships routinely visit in the winter season have had damage to the infrastructure and the cruise berth or terminal, so it has been necessary to remove these ports from the itineraries until they are repaired and ready for cruise visitors. The ports currently closed are Dominica, St. Maarten, St. Thomas, San Juan and Tortola. Your cruise operator remains optimistic that these ports will be operational before the end of the year.

As a result of these port closures, your cruise operator has found it necessary to replace the call to Philipsburg, St. Maarten with one to Fort De France, Martinique. In order to accommodate this change, the call date for St. Johns, Antigua has also been amended. The full revised itinerary is as follows:"
i dare say they will amend further as ports come back online. for me its not an issue ive been to st maarten before and i dont think ive been to martinique so works for me.
i hope your all affected as little as ive been. enjoy your hols thats the main thing.

i go on the 7th oct from southampton 24 days to the carribean and back.no news of any itinery changes as yet. but so what i am lucky enough to be on holiday and its not going to ruin my holiday if we have to miss an island or 2 or visit a different island instead. i think it would be worse not to go. at least the few dollars i spend on whichever island will enable someone to earn something towards getting things back to normal. i am under no illusion that my spend will make much difference lets just hope the governments can make the rest happen.

i agree just because another person has had an issue with someone it shouldnt affect where my tip goes. and tips should not in anyway end up in the companies pocket. be that a restaurant, cruise ship or whatever. people are tipping the staff not p&o. ratings/feedback should be a matter for hr and appropriate training given or disciplinary action taken not something that reduces remuneration especially tips.
