final thoughts and musings i hope youve enjoyed my drivel the last month or so.
firstly, omg where does all the dust come from and yee gods do i really get that much junk mail in a month ! and ok how do i work the cooker.
anyway as you may know if youve read all this rubbish so far the last time i cruised was about 2005 a couple of years afer my wife died and i stopped as the single supplement was getting silly anyway for medical reasons in sept i was told not to fly so began the hunt for a holiday with no flying. and that i could cope with 2 gammy knees.
    tips ive learnt
    1. use the baggage handling company for your large bag as train would be near impossible with a case and duff knees. i cant comment on the bus service but it sounds a viable alternative. also i dont have to think about dirty washing for another couple of days till the bag arrives lol.
    2. take more underwear and socks as in warmer climes you will want to change more often also more comfy shoes ladies stillettos arent easy on a moving deck (not through personal experience just observation).
3.or be prepared to endure the laundry room wars. it was discovered part way through the cruise that the "out of order" machine on deck 5 wasnt "out of order" merely one womans way of beating the queues. beware of dirty tricks.
4.be prepared to queue and wait on embarkation and disembarkation, however it is very well organised but taxing if you have to stand on gammy legs.assistance is available so do book it, i didnt and suffered dont let pride get in the way.
    5. if your not a fan of a particular brand of toiletry, sunscreen etc. dont pack any call in at boots or somewhere when you get to southampton as they add a lot of weight to your bags. or just use the ones supplied theyre not bad.sunscreen wasnt that much more expensive on the ship. so if weights an issue for your bags its an extra couple of pairs of shoes or something.
6.most importantly avoid the moaners a bit difficult i know on p&o but boy can they put a downer on your holiday, frequent the casino more the people in there seem to be a bit more laid back. one guy i kept encountering in the coffee shop kept whittering on about a chip in his sink. honestly how does that affect your holiday. most of the cruises i went on previously were ncl or rccl and mostly americans they seemed more interested in enjoying the experience for some reason we brits want to moan. i have to say i wont let them put me off but it really could put some off p&o. which would be a shame as it does still have formal night which i have to say i enjoy and there are alternatives if you dont want to dress. some i think spent the whole cruise on deck 9 alternating between their sunbed and the buffet.

in conclusion an excellant holiday the only minor "complaint" the single supplement but its there and i have to suck it up unfortunateley and i have as i have booked 2 more on board as it saved quite a bit and build in the extra obc as a disount in a sense its a little more bearable. the important thing do your homework and be honest with yourself what do you want from your holiday,if you dont want to dress up or have fixed mealtimes then other lines may be more appropriate but there are alternative dining options so dont dismiss p&o out of hand. be realistic about what you expect.

just when you thought it was all over !!!!
sat in the cruise bookings alcove correcting an error they made and as its basically an open plan area you can hear whats going on in the reception area.
theres a lady who has a balcony cabin just below the aft pool deck looking out the back of the ship as is custom the sailaway party is going on as we leave port and its the full pomp and circumstance. shes up there complaining its too noisy can they turn it down or shut up but the kicker ............ could she have 4 of the union jacks as she wasnt going to the party but wants them for the grandkids.
me and the sales lady were on the floor....lol.

ok probably the final post on this thread from me at any rate.
just one sea day to go after today and then southampton and home so i thought i would summarise really.
24 days is a lot of sea days and the islands all clumped together in the middle effectively.
it has been a great holiday i have thoroughly enjoyed the break especially the sunshine my knees are most grateful.
the product served up by p&o has been excellant.
no real issues a minor problem of no cold water for a few hours one day but the rest fine.
the food on the whole excellant standouts both involve steak and kidney, a pie in the buffet and a pudding in the restaurant special mention must be made to the steak and kidney pie in the buffet it was superb and they even gave you extra steak and kidney gravy available as well.
the crew have all been superb and you cant fault their diligence.
the down sides i am afraid all come from my fellow passengers, the moaning is unreal and bears no relation to the product offered.
peoples ignorance and downright rudeness astounds me. i am a placid sort and rarely get involved in other peoples business but i had to say something yesterday to one women when she was speaking to one of the waiting staff it was like something out of the 17th century the way she was speaking down to him and instructing him as if he was her personal servant. give him his due he took it all and went off to do her bidding and i said to her who the hell do you think you are speaking to him like that. she turned round and said along the lines of these foreigners have to have everything explained twice they dont understand english. well i let her have both barrells, needless to say she complained to the restaurant manager. i dont know what she thought he would do to me a fellow passenger. but hey she deserved it.
when he came over to ask me about it i explained what happened and just slapped my own wrist and smiled at him,he grinned and walked off giggling.
the age demographic on such a long cruise is understandably high and at times the piano bar in an afternoon resembles a mix of those on life support (i am sure some of the sofas hide medical machinery) and those who have passed on. i am sure the waiters occasionally check for pulses.
i have thoroughly enjoyed it and will cruise in the future but will definateley avoid fellow passengers more in future. can you get a cruise for one lol.

exactly right owt 2 of the biggest moaners from day 1 i  met outside the next cruise shop thingy and they were debating which cruise they were going to book.
i said i thought you didnt like the cruise she looked daggers at me and said we dont go with anyone else. i just carried on to the bar shaking my head.

ok i accept i am now guilty of exactly what is rapidly ruining a perfectly good cruise.
i am on the arcadia 24 nights to/from southampton to the carribeaan. paid £3k just over for an inside cabin at the bottom of the ship but its fine.
the cruise so far 3 days at sea, fairly calm pleasant weather all is good with the world plentiful and good food and drink no complaints then you would think.
omg the one thing that is driving me to the brink is the constant and i mean CONSTANT whinging of other passengers.
"standards arent what they used to be"
"wasnt like this when noah was in charge."
"my egg was 2 degrees colder than yesterday"
"ive cruised 2 zillion times with p&o i want an upgrade i dont care if your full."
"the bed was folded down 2 degrees off centre"
"smokers shouldnt smoke in the smoking areas i want to sit on that side of the deck move the entire smoking area"
"why should i pay for that, in the 50's that was free"
"i know the captain i want (inset your own demand)."
ive seen the comments on here about "p&o moaners" but my god theyre worse in real life.
honestly i would really not reccomend a P&O cruise to anyone not because of the company or the ship or anything to do with the product.
    the customers are a nightmare.

thanks for that 2torts, they havent come up with a tour list yet, a lot will depend on the damage to the knees etc trying to keep upright over the next day or so.
i think i may just hibernate in the east bar, tie myself to a bar stool and ride it out lol.

ok it couldnt last, the captains just been on, the next 48 hrs are going to get lumpy, 5 metre swells.
secure any loose objects etc etc. pria de vitoria is out on friday and la corruna spain is on as substitute on sunday as moving east will reduce the bad wweather effects.
now to any sensible person this is nothing more than a logical decision on safety grounds and at worst a minor inconveniance you would think. the captain has said all daytrips paid for will be automatically refunded and in due course they will announce trips etc for spain.
    no problem you would think.

oh no the back seat navigators and sea experts are out in force, its not that bad he could get in its a conspiracy hes incompetant and of course those wanting compensation. for what for gods sake your still getting a port day just a different country the forcast for spain is sun the forecast for the azores is high winds and pouring rain i know which i would prefer.

i opted for a table for 8 at 20.30 same people each night although we are down to 6 as one couple changed to early sitting. weve had a right laugh.
not quite sure how fredom dining works as you tip up as and when your ready between 6.30 and 8.30 i dont know if you get a table for 2 or added to a table as it fills.
i only live near chesterfield was born in norwich so i am a canary and were in the championship. i dont usually watch football more an oval ball fan.
most of the ship is fine regarding mobility i am just restricted by pain, i have had to rest up a couple of afternoons particularly after day trips.
i restricted myself to half day trips and a lot of the islands ive seen before so it wasnt an issue. in the buffet the staff are great if your struggling to use a tray if youve got a stick they are there asking if you need them to carry for you etc.
the place to watch out for is the art gallery the floor is sloped in 2 different directions caused me no end of problems to start with as theres no other throughway on deck 2. i now avoid by using the prom deck on 3 to bypass it. i smoke ecigs anyway so it works fine i go up to 3 along the deck then down to 2 where the restaurant is. but it will depend where your cabin is.
the system on board is as you say you register a card then use your cabin key to pay for drinks etc but for some reason the waiters process the payment side the barman just makes the drinks, even if you stand at the bar.
the only place ive seen or felt remotely crowded is the buffet at lunchtime and the aft deck around 3ish on a sunny day.

    sorry pesky,
its been a relative moan free zone the last few days. ive been updating the other thread with just cruise stuff, i was leaving this one for the comedy moments. now were back at sea i will probably encounter them again.
they are mostly sat outside the cruise booking offices whinging to each other while they sort out their next cruise its wierd like a coven of witches or the women under the guillotine, ripping apart this cruise to each other and then comparing notes on the cruise they are going to book. its like a les dawson sketch.
nora batty meets ena sharples. then theres a group of husbands off to the side trying to get football results. a comedy writer would have a field day.
each time ive walked past the numbers stay pretty constant just the individuals change.
its amazing all the things they consider wrong about each ship the crews the itineries etc i am sure one of the girls on reception just accross the room wet herself.
you keep seeing the receptionists heads duck below counter level trying not to laugh out loud. the coven seem oblivious to the fact theres at least 6 crew members can hear every word they say as its an open plan area.

its a personal thing whichever you prefer, i use the fixed dining mostly so i get to know the people that serve me so to speak. so i tip personally rather than via the automated system if they then opt to pool that its their decision. and usually i tip more than they auto tip anyway so it doesnt worry me. and ive never had any adverse reaction to opting out of the auto system.

exactly right owt 2 of the biggest moaners from day 1 i  met outside the next cruise shop thingy and they were debating which cruise they were going to book.
i said i thought you didnt like the cruise she looked daggers at me and said we dont go with anyone else. i just carried on to the bar shaking my head.

i assure you i am not making this up.
we docked in the azores this morning.
last night the sea was a mill pond and i was sat outside the east bar puffing on my e-cig, bacardi etc in hand enjoying the most glorious sunset.
the ship was practically stationary all was well with the world.
this couple came out, she sniffed oh its a smoking area all huffy and hubby says "its hardly moving, if he put his foot down we could have docked tonight"
about turned and went back to the bar.
i nearly had an accident. lol.
back seat drivers as well. tee hee

ok i accept i am now guilty of exactly what is rapidly ruining a perfectly good cruise.
i am on the arcadia 24 nights to/from southampton to the carribeaan. paid £3k just over for an inside cabin at the bottom of the ship but its fine.
the cruise so far 3 days at sea, fairly calm pleasant weather all is good with the world plentiful and good food and drink no complaints then you would think.
omg the one thing that is driving me to the brink is the constant and i mean CONSTANT whinging of other passengers.
