mitch got a reaction from B&M in Drink prices on P &O
again its the "benidorm all inclusive" effect, people have gone on these all inclusive binge fests that masquerade as holidays and now want the same thing on cruise ships. i hope that the impending over capacity that the march to bigger and bigger ships will lead to will not drag the whole sector down that route.
some people will never be satisfied cruises are cheaper than ever before and p&o probably have one of the most reasonable bar tarriffs some will moan just for the sake of moaning and to expect prices to be remotely close to supermarket prices is just rediculous. and is probably a good reason for the govt to bring in minimum prices for alcohol.

i came off arcadia on 31st oct i thought drinks were very reasonable beer 3.5 to 4.5 depending on brand. ive paid more in pubs even up here.
cocktails etc 4.5 to 6.5 depending on spirits involved and there was always a daily special both alcoholic and non alcoholic that was 50p or a pound cheaper than at  other times.

in part they are victims of  the technology now enables them to commission bigger and bigger ships meaning they need far more bums on seats.
in my opinion bigger is not better.
some ships are now heading towards being disneyland on water. not my idea of fun and i wont be going there anytime soon.
i will happily cruise less often on a mid sized ship with an interesting itinery. it will no doubt cost more.

in a way i think this is the effect of the "benidorm" all inclusive being moved on to cruise ships less and less is a cruise something special. theres almost a rush to the lowest common denominator. more and more "all inclusive" drinks packages. i have rarely seen people abuse alcohol etc on a cruise but it seems to be coming more of an issue over the last few years. the pressure to reduce costs has seen a down grading of the standard fare in main dining areas and the cruiselines have seen a way of gaining revenue by offering "upgrades".
but in a sense driven by demand on the cruise in oct many of the residents of deck 9 buffet/pool area effectively spent nothing on the cruise never went to the main dining etc and their goal was a nil onboard account. and they all claimed to have paid less and less for the cruise in the first place. many do the same cruise or v similar every year.it was practically a pensioners annual get together. so i dont think the entire blame can be put at the cruiselines door. the customers have to take some of the blame too.

Most cruise lines - particularly the mass-market ones - keep the base prices so low by having a number of 'on-board revenue centres' to part pax and their pennies.  No-one is forced to use them and without them, the base price would undoubtedly rise.  When I started cruising in 1995, food in the main mdr was significantly better than it is now but the fare was (comparatively) at least twice what it is now.

on a 14 day carribean cruise in the 90's a woman would reserve about 8 sunbeds in a particular corner of the pool deck set them out in a particular order then pull out various towells and personal effects and distribute them around the beds she did this the entire 1st week. in fairness she would then occupy one of the beds for most of the morning. the remaining beds were all for her freinds/family who had gone ashore on various trips and didnt join her until at least 1pm depending on the trip they were on.she was extremely rude to any staff member who even dared to enquire about removing towels etc.
one morning for some reason i was up early and she was delayed, anyway needless to say i bagged a bed and small table right in the middle of her territory. within a few minutes the pool bar tenders and a growing number of waiters had gathered at the bar obviously tying to decide who would get the short straw of coming over to talk to me. i ordered my drink  and sat back.
well her face was a picture when she arrived with her shopping bag of towels etc,the bar staff and waiters were all trying hard to look as though they were busy doing other things and had by now called their boss. she went ballistic, thats my bed etc etc i always have this area on and on she went for a good 5 minutes.
i simply stood up towered over her and said i dont see your name on the chair or deck so "go away". sat down and had a drink. she span round spotted the bar manager and sped off towards him ive never seen bar staff and waiters scatter so fast lol. give him his due the manager didnt back down and simply showed her the sign on the bar about reserving beds etc. other people around and the bar staff applauded as she slunk off to find a new domain and the bar manager sent over a free drink! so it was a good start to the day lol.

mitch got a reaction from Jenjen in single supplements are the cruise lines losing out.
no i accept that although most specifically single rooms are cheaper than a double and that is why usually i book my own holidays as particularly in the states a hotel room costs x regardless of no of occupants flight costs y. total cost of holiday is considerably cheaper than package from agent with single supplement. but you cant tell me p&o and others need a supplement of 100% to make a profit.
also my point was that particularly on the cruise i was on most of the "couples" on deck 9 spent virtually nothing whilst on board whereas the "singles" spent a considerable amount in comparison. even the single berths now appearing on some ships are still almost the same price if not more in some cases than single occupency of a double cabin. i am not saying there is no justification for a supplement i question the level of that supplement.
also usually over the last 10 years i have gone to las vegas partly as its cheaper to source my own hotel and flight but also the hotel/casino comp you on your spend and many times ive had several nights if not all comped. there is no such benefit on a cruise.
nowadays even supermarkets give you perks based on what and how often you spend.

thats the biggest problem i have at the moment as i cannot fly at the moment until they resolve a medical issue so i need holidays in or to and from the uk. it severely restricts your choice of operators. and murphys law applies they happen to be the ones with the biggest supplements.
its galling as it happens i have far more flexibility regarding when i can go and how often i can go than ever before only to find the cost prohibitive at worst, restrictive at best. still at least i am fortunate enough to be able to have holidays i appreciate many cant and i dont want to appear a grinch. i have no problem paying a fair price for a product but i do feel many cruiselines take advantage.

having just come back from a 24 night cruise on p&o various conversations with other singles on board led me to wonder if in fact the cruise lines are losing out by charging a supplement so high often 100% on some lines.
maybe it was just the demographic of the cruise i was on but a large number were older couple whose sole intent seemed to be to have a zero on board account at the end of the cruise and pretty much all the singletons of many ages seemed to frequent the livelier bars and casino and had quite high on board accounts. most far exceeded the supplement they had paid. and all the singletons said that they would cruise more often where it not for the single supplement.
now i am sure someone with access to the requisite profit and loss etc may shoot me down but someone with a high cabin spend cruising more often must be of more benefit than a couple with next to no spend even if they go more than once a year. a lot of the deck 9 residents as i called them repeat that same cruise or something similar each year it seemed but only a few cruised at other times.
    thoughts anyone?

final thoughts and musings i hope youve enjoyed my drivel the last month or so.
firstly, omg where does all the dust come from and yee gods do i really get that much junk mail in a month ! and ok how do i work the cooker.
anyway as you may know if youve read all this rubbish so far the last time i cruised was about 2005 a couple of years afer my wife died and i stopped as the single supplement was getting silly anyway for medical reasons in sept i was told not to fly so began the hunt for a holiday with no flying. and that i could cope with 2 gammy knees.
    tips ive learnt
    1. use the baggage handling company for your large bag as train would be near impossible with a case and duff knees. i cant comment on the bus service but it sounds a viable alternative. also i dont have to think about dirty washing for another couple of days till the bag arrives lol.
    2. take more underwear and socks as in warmer climes you will want to change more often also more comfy shoes ladies stillettos arent easy on a moving deck (not through personal experience just observation).
3.or be prepared to endure the laundry room wars. it was discovered part way through the cruise that the "out of order" machine on deck 5 wasnt "out of order" merely one womans way of beating the queues. beware of dirty tricks.
4.be prepared to queue and wait on embarkation and disembarkation, however it is very well organised but taxing if you have to stand on gammy legs.assistance is available so do book it, i didnt and suffered dont let pride get in the way.
    5. if your not a fan of a particular brand of toiletry, sunscreen etc. dont pack any call in at boots or somewhere when you get to southampton as they add a lot of weight to your bags. or just use the ones supplied theyre not bad.sunscreen wasnt that much more expensive on the ship. so if weights an issue for your bags its an extra couple of pairs of shoes or something.
6.most importantly avoid the moaners a bit difficult i know on p&o but boy can they put a downer on your holiday, frequent the casino more the people in there seem to be a bit more laid back. one guy i kept encountering in the coffee shop kept whittering on about a chip in his sink. honestly how does that affect your holiday. most of the cruises i went on previously were ncl or rccl and mostly americans they seemed more interested in enjoying the experience for some reason we brits want to moan. i have to say i wont let them put me off but it really could put some off p&o. which would be a shame as it does still have formal night which i have to say i enjoy and there are alternatives if you dont want to dress. some i think spent the whole cruise on deck 9 alternating between their sunbed and the buffet.

in conclusion an excellant holiday the only minor "complaint" the single supplement but its there and i have to suck it up unfortunateley and i have as i have booked 2 more on board as it saved quite a bit and build in the extra obc as a disount in a sense its a little more bearable. the important thing do your homework and be honest with yourself what do you want from your holiday,if you dont want to dress up or have fixed mealtimes then other lines may be more appropriate but there are alternative dining options so dont dismiss p&o out of hand. be realistic about what you expect.
