i wouldnt worry about all the snobs around just enjoy the holiday.
i came back from a 24 nighter on arcadia at the end of oct. perfectly good cruise a couple of issues round and about with plumbing but to hear some people whinging you would have thought it was the cruise from hell.
one guy was moaning on board and put it in an online reveiw on and on that there was a chip in his sink. well if thats your only wory on a holiday and it ruins it then i think it says more about him than owt else.
in the past i cruised on airtours, thomson, ncl, rccl, cunard and p&o ive enjoyed them all.
a cabin is a cabin its a box with a bed and a shower etc.

i just dont get the need to take your own booze on board. if i wanted to splash out on a cabin with a balcony i can understand the attraction of a sundowner but if i am paying that much extra to get a balcony i reckon i could afford room service or something from the inroom fridge/bar. the saving in terms of money bringing your own booze on board cant be huge.
ive never understood the people who pay extra to get a balcony and then spend the entire cruise pennypinching. there were loads on the 24 nighter i went on in oct they paid for a balcony then spent the entire cruise on deck 9 by the pool getting all their drinks from the buffet on deck 9.  i assume the rest of their time on the balcony with their own booze.they were all comparing how low their on board account was they only paid for drinks in the last week when they realised they had obc left.

in part they are victims of  the technology now enables them to commission bigger and bigger ships meaning they need far more bums on seats.
in my opinion bigger is not better.
some ships are now heading towards being disneyland on water. not my idea of fun and i wont be going there anytime soon.
i will happily cruise less often on a mid sized ship with an interesting itinery. it will no doubt cost more.

in a way i think this is the effect of the "benidorm" all inclusive being moved on to cruise ships less and less is a cruise something special. theres almost a rush to the lowest common denominator. more and more "all inclusive" drinks packages. i have rarely seen people abuse alcohol etc on a cruise but it seems to be coming more of an issue over the last few years. the pressure to reduce costs has seen a down grading of the standard fare in main dining areas and the cruiselines have seen a way of gaining revenue by offering "upgrades".
but in a sense driven by demand on the cruise in oct many of the residents of deck 9 buffet/pool area effectively spent nothing on the cruise never went to the main dining etc and their goal was a nil onboard account. and they all claimed to have paid less and less for the cruise in the first place. many do the same cruise or v similar every year.it was practically a pensioners annual get together. so i dont think the entire blame can be put at the cruiselines door. the customers have to take some of the blame too.

its been about for a while there a couple of other threads about it. i think theyve had a few issues particularly on the short weekend cruises with stags/hens.
that said other lines stopped personal alchol being taken on board years ago.
its not a major problem from what i can see, the drinks prices on p&o arent as high as other lines and it doent bother me less to lug on board.

i dont think we should get bogged down with what agents do or dont get i think it detracts from the main issue.
the compensation from p&o is derisory and in no way compensates for the inconveniance or the costs elsewhere that people have incurred.
i havent looked at the itinery but visa costs, extra insurance costs, car parking hotels travel etc. let alone the sheer embuggerence of having to sort something else.
will insurence pick up those costs? what about the inevitable excess. i bet given the age of some off p&o's clients the health insurance alone would be pricey for a 50 night cruise. it would be interesting to see what people are actually out of pocket after the event. p&o ought to do some research and find out what the real cost is and then build that information into their future offers.

mitch reacted to HLM in Marella Dream
I sailed on the Dream in it's first season with Thomson.
Before sailing I was reading horror stories online and it even featured on BBC's Watchdog program, I was dreading it to be honest, but once onboard I couldn't understand what all the fuss was about, I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I was mystified on my return to find numerous horror reviews relating to the cruise I was on, some claiming things that simply did not happen for example the theatre was said to be closed for 2 day's because of alleged raw sewerage coming through the ceiling etc, it didn't though, it became quite apparent that people had jumped on the compensation bandwagon following previous and a few justified complaints on it's initial sailings.
I Learnt a valuable lesson following that, it was not to believe all you read and hear.
The Dream is an older ship but more than acceptable, entertainment was excellent and food very nice and crew probably the best I've ever encountered on a cruise, what more do you need.
It's been a while since I sailed on her so I suspect things would have been changed a bit in terms of decor etc, so can't help you there, other than to say go and enjoy
    HLM.

the trouble with any policy designed to stop something the barrack room lawyers all come out from under their stones with a pile of what ifs and maybes.
when any sensible person can see what is the clear intention of a particular restriction. but from a pr point of veiw the cruiselines lawyers get involved and you end up with a fudge.
really what they should have put was:
no alcohol to be brought on board and no stags/hens with lude t-shirts etc getting legless and upsetting other passengers.
