    I'm on Duty this week

Thought I'd just give a mention, and hopefully a boost, to the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal this year. I've been helping out with selling poppies and won the local Asda store just outside Fareham... I have just been so impressed with the generosity of local people willing to donate pretty large amounts for their poppies and broaches. And of course, all going to a great cause. So if I'm not posting so much on here this week you know where I am.

  2. Is there anything more frustrating than being asked this question on holiday? Just leave it alone! I don’t get why people need to ask this question, in fact I think it’s rude to do so. What do people get from asking this? If you’ve paid less than I have I’m going to feel a bit hard done by, if it’s the other way around, you’re going to feel hard done by, so let’s just agree to be happy that we’re on board and just enjoy ourselves! We were happy with the price when we booked it otherwise we wouldn’t have booked it would we? The question should be outlawed and passengers should b

  4. I can’t even comprehend living through anything like this, to have something as basic as your home ripped away with everything inside, my heart goes out to everyone affected. I was on carnivals Facebook yesterday and the amount of selfish people moaning about changes to their holidays, spare a thought for people who have their whole lives affected, not just a day out of their holiday.

  5. Well, having asked Admin to provide a "reviews and blogs" section, I guess i should start us off. Hopefully this is the first of many blogs that others will post in the months ahead. This is a slightly edited version of my daily blog from last month, that you may have seen posted elsewhere. I hope it's of interest. Day 1 - Fjord Focus Well, here we are for our 7 day cruise to Norway on the glorious Oriana, and we had a really decent run down to Southampton despite the almost constant rain this morning. In fact, I think we would have made it in record time had we not hit the traffic going t

  6. This type of person will more than likely moan about anything and everything. If they don't realise that this procedure is for the good of the ship then they are just plain ignorant. It's probably the same people that don't think it's necessary to wash their hands after using the toilet. Imagine the moan they'd have if they were locked in their cabin for 3 days... in fact that's probably the best place for them

    P&o Tirade

I have met a few moaners onboard P&O ships but very few considering the number of passengers on the ship. Reading some of the cruise sites it would make you wonder if there were any happy cruisers. Look at P&O's Facebook page, it's absolutely full of moaners. I think it's an occupation for some people. We have never had occasion to moan. We were on a three week cruise on Azura last March, sailing around and then back to Southampton from the Caribbean. On the first night when it was open dining to allow passengers arriving on planes at different times we were sat on a table for 8.

  9. Stop the planning. Change to three Aurora like ships with modern propulsion. Make customers happy. Reverse the apparently continuous decline in food standards. Allow exec chefs to be chefs again. They've stopped smiling since they were given regimented non negotiable menus. Bad move P&O. I thought Carnival had introduced the policy that a British cruise ship is identical to a USA ship except for warm beer! Wasn't Oriana the last truly British ship?

  10. Hi David, As always the answer is not straight forward. In most cases we have taken the commercial decision to process client credit cards directly with cruise operator, thereby no pipeline monies are held by ourselves at any time during the booking process. This means that we offer clients maximum protection for their money, a level of confidence that is not generally available elsewhere. As a consequence, when booking via ourselves, the card transactions are subject to the fee imposed by the cruise operator, which is generally 1.5%. A small number of operators such as Royal Caribbean and

All the ones already mentioned but the what I hate most are the people who treat and talk to the waiters and stewards as if they were second class slaves. I could hit the finger clickers who shout boy! Have seen it, heard it and told said people not to be so bad mannered and rude.

    P&o Tirade

I couldnt agree more with ron and jaczs on this. I've cruised a lot with P&O over the years and can honestly say have never had a bad cruise. I mentioned recently on this forum that the only time I was a little bit dissapointed was on board Ventura but that was nothing to do with P&O or by no means their fault, it was just my preferences of a mid-size ship. I constantly see people going on about how P&O are not the company they once were, well if we're being honest, it's a good job thier not because if they were they probably wouldnt exist anymore due to the huge rise in riv

  15. I'd not seen this no but I do agree with it. We all know it's a pain, especially for passengers that have been through it many times before but it's still important, much like you wouldn't expect to board a flight without seeing a safety drill before you take off. People need to just accept that it's done for their safety, it doesn't take all that long. Just attend and then move on. I agree with P&O doing this because it puts safety first and stops ignorance getting in the way.

  16. Brits that cruise with P&O have always liked to moan. I have done all maiden cruises on all P&O ships and there have been moans Aurora moaned about static from new carpets the moaners said they should rip up all carpets and put "proper" carpets in. On Arcadia a lot moaned because it was not initially built to be a P&O at design stage it was to be Holland & America ship and then passed on to Cunard to be new QV but they didn't want it so it became Arcadia and lots moaned that the Americans i.e. Carnival were treating Brits like second class citizens dumping unwanted cruise ships

  17. I heard this rumour when i was onboard in December I dont think there is anything to it just people saying they are going to put a central staircase in. What makes me laugh is that the Solstice class of Celebrity and both regal and royal Princess have no central staircase, but there are no dramas for those ships. Us Brits need to moan don't we.

Customers say that standards have fallen but when asked which standards they are sometimes hard pressed to say. Go back 50 years and when compared with today it can be seen that standards have in fact risen. Example, how many 2 berth cabins consist now of 'bunk beds', answer, none. How many cabins now do not have ensuite facilities? answer, none. How many ships don't have stabilisers? answer, none. 50 years ago, how many ships offered the selection of food types now available on the modern ship, answ

I have been tapping your wife, day and night when you’re not around. I’m not getting any at home, but that’s no excuse. I can no longer live with the guilt and I hope you will accept my sincerest apology with my promise that it won’t happen again.” The man, anguished and betrayed, went into his bedroom, grabbed his gun, and without a word, shot his wife and killed her. A few moments later, a second text came in: Damn autocorrect. I meant “wifi”, not “wife”.

    P&o Tirade

P&O are stuck between a rock and a hard place passengers want the very best of everything but they don't want to pay a fortune, Passengers want more and more balconies more places to eat more bars more pools but then they moan when the ships get larger. I agree about the P&O Facebook page as yesterday it was the largest moan fest I had seen but it is no good saying I had an awful time moan about it but never say what the moan is about. P&O may not always get things right but at the prices they are charging at the moment they are flipping good value.

it does make me chuckle all this fuss, several studies have shown that our antiseptic city lives have caused increases in asthma and other respiritory complaints over and above the problems of air quality and the over prescribing of antibiotics are causing all sorts of problems. studies showed that individuals in rural areas particularly farming communities were far healthier and much more resistant to illness than their city dwelling counterparts as they were exposed to far more bacteria etc and build up a natural resistance. the vacinne for smallpox was developed from antibodies from a milk

We are also happy re: the personalised slogan tee shirts we had someone in the dining room in the evening in October and no one stopped him coming in so hopefully people will get the message. 26. on a 14 day carribean cruise in the 90's a woman would reserve about 8 sunbeds in a particular corner of the pool deck set them out in a particular order then pull out various towells and personal effects and distribute them around the beds she did this the entire 1st week. in fairness she would then occupy one of the beds for most of the morning. the remaining beds were all for her freinds/family who had gone ashore on various trips and didnt join her until at least 1pm depending on the trip they were on.she was extremely rude to any staff member who even dared to enquire about removing towel

  27. If you could change one cruise ship rule/policy, what would it be? I've seen a few reviews recently complaining about smoking areas on board, some people want to remove these areas altogether and others were saying how unfair the smoking area rule is... So, would this be something you would get rid of or would you remove the smoking ban? Or would you stop something like the mandatory muster drill attendance? Perhaps scrap dining sitting times? Or would you like to see your own alcohol allowed on board? What would you change? Personally, I’d like to see the back of speciality restaura

  28. The reason for cruising is to have formal evenings. Dress codes are dropping everywhere but to have a formal evening and see everyone in their best attire is wonderful. I would prefer more formal evenings. We always cruise with P and O but have also been on the Queen Mary. The whole ambience of the ship changes on formal evenings.

  29. Smaller ship like Adonia and Aurora. Reading the list of things onboard the new ship just makes me think why waste money on a cruise when you could go to Butlins, because that to me is what it looks like. As you can guess I like small. It allows ships to go to more places that the big ships can't reach.

    Happy New Year!

On behalf of all of us at Bolsover Cruise Club we hope you’ve had an enjoyable Christmas. The forum continues to grow and we are looking forward to seeing even more informative and interesting topics throughout the year ahead. With that being said, it’s a shame that only 4 days into the New Year it has already become necessary for us to step in and issue a warning. We have received a number of reports about inappropriate comments made on several threads - this type of behaviour is damaging to our forum and is offending members who wish to be a part of a knowledgable and friendly community.

As someone who has cruised (happily) with P&O for many years, it saddens me to read the increasing number of forum comments regarding the fall in standards as, unfortunately, I agree with many of them. Obviously, we all have varying and differing opinions on what constitutes a high standard, be it of service, personnel, food, décor, entertainment etc. and, yes it's difficult to please all of the people all of the time. Many a complaint, I'm sure, has been fired off to the 'powers that be' over recent years and, according to many loyal passengers who have taken the trouble to make the

In the old days you had bunk beds in the lower cabins, shared bathrooms and toilets, now everybody has on suite. Entertainment is now far better than it ever was simply because the modern ships have the electronic wizardry and moving stages to make it possible. People mention about no 'Silver Service' any more but from what I read it becomes clear that some do not really know what 'Silver Service' is. Pro rata the cost of cruising now

nothing annoys me more than getting on your cruise talking to some lovely passengers for them to suddenly turn round and ask you the most personal of questions 'how much did you pay?'! I dont ask them how much they earn in a year so why do you want to know how much i do! i paid what i paid and i was happy with it. im on holiday and want to enjoy it not be shoved down my throat that someone got it cheaper or got some more on board spend! Smoking On Balcony

Well, I too paid for my balcony and In am heartily tired of this "no smoking on balconies" issue. There is a complete lack of tolerance nowadays. I personally detest the foul stink of beer and the loud corny karaoke evenings on ships but I tolerate them and do not rant nor let it "ruin" my cruise because we are all different and therefore entitled to enjoy ourselves in whatever way we choose. That goes for smokers too, I understand that those with GENUINE health issues must avoid smoke, but half of the folk complaining are either ex smokers with a holier than thou attitude or people who sadly

    Smoking On Balcony

Could someone tell me how cigarette smoke gets into an adjoining cabin? when the balcony door is meant to be kept closed so the air-conditioning can work effectively. as for smoking on the starboard side promenade, when the ship is at sea is there not at least on average a 16knot breeze from the ships forward motion plus trillions of litres of air flowing past? everyone must have a very keen sense of smell,it's a wonder they don't complain about the ship's exhaust emission's at night, you should see what come's out of the exhaust funnel's.

  41. Hi I do think a "few" passengers do complain about minor matters and definitely exaggerate the affect of these concerns to enhance the compensation they expect. However, the marketing departments of cruise lines are not averse to exaggerating the claims about the "luxury" product you find on board but how many cruise lines deliver their promises? Most cruise lines do offer a decent cruise experience but very few come anywhere near offering the degree of indulgence they imply.

    One Year On

I happened to glance at my profile earlier and saw that it is just over a year since I joined this forum. That gave me the idea to ask a question of myself. What is it that i like personally about the Bolsover Cruise Club Forum. The answer as easy. I think it's about the members who generally are a most discerning group of cruisers, most with considerable knowledge of life in a cruising environment. I could of course add to that by saying that the majority also come across as not relying on the forum for their social existence. That is what makes it so much better: we pop
